You still have to consider the distance from the halide bulbs to the glass top. Its will discolor rapidly due to the heat and saltcreep and such. If you plan to leave the top on and are willing to do regular maintenance, or replacing the glass in regular intervals you might be able to do it. But...

Ive got an Oceanic reef ready. I converted it to the Durso standpipe and have no complaints. The only tricky part is adjusting the air so the water level in the overflow will stay consistant and not move up and down(caused by lack of or too much air).HTH Mini-Reefer

You could put a fan above the tank. I dont have halides on my 34 but with the fan blowing(fan is 7" diameter)There is enough surface movement to give the shimmer effect even with only pc's and no's. Plus you get the added cooling for the tank which is starting to be more of a concern this time...

I've had a Bangaii for nearly a year and he has been very low maintenance. Loves blood worms more than anything else. Are you saying youve killed 25 Bangaiis? Please give more info on your tank and filtration.
