    Success with Pakistan Butterfly?

Rigby - Butterfly fish can leave corals alone for long periods of time and then all of a sudden do extensive damage for no apparent reason. I'd watch carefully. BTW, where in Iowa are you and what LFS do you go use? Spinner

    How bout a five pack

Tommyfish Your anemones in Pic #5 are a Fiji-type anemone that, while attractive, are pests comprable to aiptasias. Unfortunately, they're harder to eliminate. About the only way to eliminate them is to use a syringe and inject them. There has been some discussion on the board as to what to...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

Steve - Fantastic system. What an accomplishment. Now that the tank has been set up for nearly 6 months (if I figured correctly), is there anything that you would do differently or have changed since the set up of your 850? As for your skimmers (I believe I read in another thread that the...

several things in tank are splitting

About 5 years ago, I had a rose bulb anemone that split and split and split. I gave them to friends and other hobbyists. Unfortunately, about 2 years later, due to a massive home renovation and relocation of the tank, I was forced to take it down for a few months. Well, to make a long story...

several things in tank are splitting

Simple answer is that your tank is a healthy environment for its inhabitants. Anemones will split and can split fairly often. As for leathers, I've had them split before. Typically, this is a fairly slow process compared to anemones. The health and growth are shown in a variety of ways...

    Lagoonal Reef

Thanks for the reply. What are your overall water parameters and have you found that you've needed activated carbon or a phosphate sponge/Phosguard? Also, in your early pictures, the cynobacteria was plentiful. Did you find it in your display tank also. Spinner

    Waterfaller's blues

Doodle, Don't get discouraged. You may have to try again. To increase the chances for success, you need a clean shot into them before they recede. Good luck. Spinner

    Lagoonal Reef

Bang - As a newcomer here, I just had the opportunity to read about your lagoon. Fascinating, awesome. Plus, your willingness to share your knowledge is admirable. I'd like to hear a little about the success of the display tank and as a result of the lagoon - primarily the growth rate of...

    new flower pot coral

I know some people who've had success with flower pots by feeding DT's, or some sort of phytoplankton. Bright light, good current also help. Good luck. Spinner

    Waterfaller's blues

Doodle - Did the syringe work? You may have to repeat the process in a week or so. Sometimes it seems you get them, but they can be pretty stubborn. Plus, it allows you to minimize the addition of calcium, vinegar, etc. at one time. Let us know how it went. Spinner

    Waterfaller's blues

Lestregus, They tend to quickly pull back into the rock if they sense something attacking them. They are incredibly fast and can completely "hide" in the rock they are attached to. Hope this helps. Spinner

    Waterfaller's blues

Maverick - I know what aiptasias are and what we are discussing is not aiptasias but a different type of anemone. While attractive, they are undoubtedly a pest. They spread rapidly and sting anything in their path. And yes, I know the difference between polyps and this type of anemones...

    Waterfaller's blues

How are they spreading? Zo's or polyps typically spread and multiply as the colony grows. The anemones can pop up anywhere in the tank as current seems to provide more than an adequate means to reach all parts of the tank. I'd rather have people mad at me than have a tank marred with these...

    Waterfaller's blues

My first post, so until I earn my stripes.... These are what I call ananemones or Fiji anemones. While they look harmless, I've found that they not only spread rapidly, but sting anything in their path. They are especially hard on anthelia, xenia and green star polyps. They are harder to...
