Fire!!! or why I no longer like Rio pumps...

BTW, I changed all of my pumps out immediately thereafter. And I now regularly change my pumps every 18 months or so. Probably a little overkill, but better than another disaster. Spinner

Fire!!! or why I no longer like Rio pumps...

I had this same problem about 3 years ago on my 180. One bad Rio 2500 in my sump and disaster ensued. The fire can cause leeching of metals that do harm to corals, corraline, etc. My fish were unaffected, but corals were a totally different story. However, I do not know how long my Rio had...

    Poll: sand or CC

Kip - Thanks for the reply. I do not have a DSB, but rather 2" of sand in front of my LR, and approximately 1" under and behind the LR. I do not utilize my sand as a DSB, but more as an aesthetic feature. As a result, my pod and bug population is not so excessive as to be able to support a...

    Poll: sand or CC

Kip - In all seriousness, aren't the bugs, etc. for the gobies, sifters and sifting starfish to eat? While I hope to increase my bug population, it is for the sake of being able to provide a "natural" food source and not to have more bugs. This is an issue that I have been contemplating lately...

    Poll: sand or CC

Sand. In my very first set up nearly 10 years ago, I went with crushed coral. After 6 months, I made the change, and I've never looked back. However with sand it is important, IMO, to have at least a good sand sifting goby, sand sifting star, cucumber or something to keep the sand stirred...

I've got a Tsunami wavemaker. It can handle three powerheads. I use Maxi Jets. IMO, they are great little pumps. The settings for Pump 1 and Pump 2 alternate. When P1 is on, P2 is off. Settings can be from 1 minute to nearly 40. P3 is independent and has its own timer. There is also a feed...

My wavemaker has a light sensor, and when the lights turn off for the night, the wavemaker adjusts the powerheads. However, they are not turned completely off. Water movement is reduced, but not eliminated. Spinner

How to get the coraline to grow?

My personal favorite calcium additive is Tropic Marin's Bio Calcium. For the non-scientific, non-technical people (like me), it is really easy to use. I just add some to either my make-up water (RO/DI) into my sump. It tends to cloud up the water temporarily, but it's not a problem. The...

what are tehse, i found them on my LR

Pic #1 is slurry, but it appears to be an aiptaisa. A clearer picture would make an id much easier. But I go with aiptaisa. Spinner

    Brand of Powerhead

I, too, am happy with Maxi Jets. I try to change out all pumps every 18 months or so. I stagger the schedule so, I do not have to change all pumps at once ($$). The reason I do this is an experience I had about 5 years ago. A pump shorted and the electrical line to the pump body became...

    When scrubbing corraline on rocks...

I've used Tropic Marin Bio Calcium as a calcium additive for nearly 5 years and have had great success with it. When I set up my last tank, I had coralline growing on the glass within 3 months. The bio calcium is added to make up water through the sump. While I'm no chemist, it does not...

    Yellow Watchman Goby

I've had one for over a year. He (I call him a he) doesn't come out very often - except when its feeding time, but when he's out, he's very cool. Probably one of my favorite fish I've ever had. Great personality. As far as your set-up, as long as there are a few hiding places within the rock...

    alge problam

Are you using RO/DI water or regular tap for your water changes? Tap, depending on the make-up of your local water, can cause diatom blooms. Also, it is beneficial to have sand sifters and adequate current throughout the tank. Spinner

    Mh lighting period

Depending on what light you are going from, I;d add no more than 30 minutes per week until you get to your desired photoperiod. Much less stress on corals, etc. FWIW Spinner

    Xenia

Kip, that's a beautiful stand of xenia. I've personally had mixed results with Xenia. It will do well for months at a time then slowly fade. And the xenia I've had in the past were frags from established, local tanks. I'm workingt a theory on xenia. It may be incorrect , but until someone can...
