    high nitrate

One word...fluval. Canisters and wet drys are known to be nitrate factories, but really, trates in low numbers are fine unless you have certain more difficult corals. Get rid of the fluval and either add a refygium with cheato or a protein skimmer. If you want to keep the fluval ( i have a...

Your opinions on opening a store

Kudos to you! I love entrepreneurs! First, I would try and do some research if possible...try and find out if there are any reef clubs near you at all. Pick their brains. Talk to the guy who "no one likes" and without giving it away what you want to do, find out how business is. I bet f you chat...

    royal gramma missing

Ive had very few fish die, but when they have, I would never see anything except a single bone if that. Cleanup crews are very adept at removing dead fish for you :-) Just check your ammonia and trite levels next day or two and add carbon if nessecary.

    ick from hell

I'll die swearing by kick-ich. Product is totally reef safe, and you cure the whole tank including ichs swimming stage, which is the important cycle. I used it a while back, no death to any inhabitants. It was reccomended to me by one of the only LFS I truly trust, and he has used it many many...

    power heads

I can only comment on rio and maxijet(marineland). Rio was good for as long as I had it in main tank (about a year) and i now use it for my eater change bucket. Maxijet is much better, and it is very strong and quiet. The other 2 i dont know, but maxijet has a great reputation.

charcoal filter & salt water tanks

yes, exactly. The ones who use it on occasion, they use it to "polish" up the water. It does remove medications, thats why they say on the ones i have seen to remove the carbon. I am still after all this time, looking for info regarding carbon's removal of trace elements. I can't seem to find...

    Water quality in my reef?

i dont want to feel dumb :notsure: but is carbon different? What is "charcoal"? In any event, i think using carbon occasionally helps take out anything you can't remove with skimming etc. I run carbon 24/7, but i have a canister and wet dry as my filtration. Im getting an aqua c remora pro...

Coral Banded Shrimp - SAFE or NOT SAFE

Hey Keonia! Im glad you found your brittle. They will hide out pretty good from time to time. Dont worry if you dont see him sometimes. No one will usually bother them. My CBS is near him all the time, and they just hang. I dont think the cbs considers it's slow motion movements a threat. I spot...

    Water quality in my reef?

I have always thought it was ok to not have exactly crystal clear water. I think sometimes people strip out too much stuff. First, make sure they aren't pods :-) Other than that, if your tank inhabitants are happy and healthy, I wouldnt worry too much about it. Junk always gets kicked up off...

Coral Banded Shrimp - SAFE or NOT SAFE

My cbs is awesome, he does claim a spot of his own, and chases away fish that intrude, but otherwise is very peaceful. When I had ich a while back, he actually took to cleaning my yellow tang. Love watching him at night scavaging. A note about your nudi....others may post about it, but I have...

    question for experts.

I have a 60 hex, so it has a small "open" area at top, no sump or anything else open, and I still lose a gallon a day. I think it is quite normal. Before I had MH light, id only lose a gallon every few days!

    Seaclone protein skimmer

Ok, Im sure i already know the answer, but here goes: Right now I have a canister filter (cascade 1000) and a hang-on wet/dry with venturi (marineland millenium 2000). This is what I am currently using, and trates always seem to be at around 10-20. I have the chance to buy a brand new seaclone...
