    is clam dyin?

If you are getting no response from TOUCHING the mantle, like actually poking at it, then chances are it is already gone. Sometimes clams come back and sometimes they don't.

    Just bought a Squammy!

It may be doing it within a couple of hours of the light going off - that is pretty common. You MIGHT want to stay up for a bit and see what it is doing after the lights go off. If there is something else bothering it and it isn't the light, it should show itself if that is the case.

    Just bought a Squammy!

You can email them to me at cfrecf @ yahoo . com without all the spaces if you want. Clam's getting to much light is the most likely problem. It's knocking itself over to shield itself from the excess light. I use a piece of acrylic and spray it down with tank water then let it dry and place it...

    Just bought a Squammy!

The thing will probably outgrow that tank within 2-4 years depending on the metabolic conditions of the clam (environmental). Also the hermit crabs, for now anyways, are most likely just going after the new form of alga(e) that came in on the clam shell. But those are LARGE crabs that are...

    Clam suggestions please

Everytime that I look at a croceas "vascular system" or and/or Zooxanthellae Tubular System I am amazed. I think of it this way. With most other clams it's like taking a piece of wood and drilling 20 - 1/8 inch holes in it and then submerging it in water (the water being the light). It's...

    Crocea help

Spot feeding a clam can harm it by causing it to draw in particles that are too large for it to consume. I have NEVER seen a Crocea burrow in a home aquarium as of yet. I use Reed Maricultures food, it is easily found. They make a specific Shellfish Diet that is incredible when it comes to fat...

    Clam suggestions please

Bristle worms do NOT intentionally kill clams. The byssal threads are constantly decaying and being replaced with new ones. Now bristle worms being decaying organic matter feeders, this is an ideal spot for them. Over time a small population may form under the clam (you will probably see that if...

    What is the best choice?

Blennies are not generally attacking the clams' mantle; just bothering it. They are just trying to get to the "slime" that is some form of alga I think (haven't determined that yet). But I have never seen chunks actually get torn out of mantles.

    What is the best choice?

There really are just ones that are harder to keep then other, period. I have stuck Croceas in tanks that were set up for less then 48 hours and 98% of the time nothing happened. There is more or less the hardiness of the clam that comes into play. Which I THINK I said, from most to least hardy...

    Clam light

Metal Halides. A flashlight with a 150 watt color specific bulb could probably put out the same PAR spectrum as a MH before it hits the water; it's what happens after it hits the water. Then again it depends on what kind of clam too. Maximas, Squamosa, Derasa, Gigas - T5s will most likely do...

    Pale spots on derasa

The actual eyes may or may not be; it's hard to tell without looking at it under a microscope. But the eye is an iridophore made of irides with iride plates stacked up to form that. Then the only thing that really tells them apart from the other iridophores around the mantle are the addition of...

My maxima has a slit on his mantle

The larger clam, I doubt that one of the crabs would go after it on purpose. If that was the case, you would probably notice more and more rips in the mantle. The smaller one you might want to keep an eye on. See if it tips over a lot or spins around a lot or opens and shuts a lot. The issue I...

    Looking at a clam

The areas that become bluer on older Croceas are similar to the rainbow color pattern that are seen through water that may just be laying on the ground. It's just like refraction to an extent. But the Iridophores on the mantle are blue and group together for a reason. They form other areas...

It'll hopefully open more. That thing looks like it might have a HUGE colony of light absorbers all over it.

    Pale spots on derasa

The first picture that you posted is centralized bleaching, or at least I am 99% sure it is centralized bleaching. The last picture that you posted, are the clams eyes. But the MIDDLE part of the clam in the first part of the picture is where I am looking.

    Clam detached

Well for one it's outcurrent siphon is under it's incurrent siphon in that picture, which you never want. That will cause it to release feces out of it's outcurrent siphon and maybe inhale it. https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/326560/gaping-mantle-parts-feeding Then, clams don't really know...

    Nova Extreme Pro?

I wouldn't keep any sort of HIGH light demanding clams or corals under there; meaning Croceas mainly. My experience with T5s and Croceas is only several hundred Croceas kept under several dozen fixtures over a period of 15 years though........... Croceas carry a strand of zooxanthellae that...

My maxima has a slit on his mantle

Hi. I doubt it would get a slit in the mantle from you just moving it around. If I had to throw a guess out there, I would say something was going after something else - so it was most likely one of the crabs. Based on the amount of time you have had the clam, I would think it is big enough...

    What kinda calm am I.

If it's a chocolate chip, it will eat the clam at some point. T5s are no where near enough light for THAT Crocea. I have seen some with less "runoffs" in their mantles lately, but even those tend to generate more over time.

Request for Clown or Anthias pics...please email

More then less, yes. A buddy of mine is thinking of putting out a book. The book would probably have a website - so yes. That's the reason it says for whatever reason.
