    Siphon overflow design (pix)

One last thing guys/gals! I can't find proper acrylic cement anywhere! Can I just use aquarium safe silicone? Will it hold the weight of the rear box?

    Siphon overflow design (pix)

Ok thanks. Then mine should be able to handle 1000+Gph. Not that I'll be going that high, but it's nice to know.

    Siphon overflow design (pix)

Okay Thanks... I like the square acrylic 'pipe' design better anyway. One more thing about flows. The skimmer box will be 8" wide. The bulkhead is 1.5". (I know it's overkill, but I have one already, so) I plan on making the square 'pipe' section 1", and of course it runs the length of the...

Any reason i couldn't put a durso style standpipe in there to silence it?

    Siphon overflow design (pix)

Yeah... I think I got it now. How's this? The bulkhead/drain pipe will be 1.5". I'll put two, 1" U-tubes. Is that okay?

    Siphon overflow design (pix)

Last Q I swear! How much does the height difference between the tank water level and the drain pipe? Namely, would it affect my flow much if the downpipe from the overflow box, (going to the sump) was only 1" lower than the tank level?

    Odd sump/fuge design...

I am doing both for sure. I'm hoping to grow Gracilaria. The only thing I have left to decide is whether I should sacrifice refugium space inside the sump to make room for a larger skimmer. It's no problem... a personal decision more than anything.

    Odd sump/fuge design...

As always, sound advice Bigmac. Thanks. Still can't decide though... but I've got time to think it over. On one hand, I really want a decent sized refugium/veggie filter. The refugium will be of great interest to me. On the other hand, a larger skimmer is a sure thing.

    Siphon overflow design (pix)

Really... To me, it seems like it would be impossible to break the siphon as long as the baffles are sized correctly. If anything, I would think that adding the fitting to the top of the U would just increase the likelyhood of losing siphon... ie. from a leaky fitting/hose. Next question: I'm...

    Siphon overflow design (pix)

Bubbles will build up even when the line on top is constantly connected to a powerhead? So a peice of U-pipe would be better? beaslbob: Re: the last baffle. Ahhh... that's a great idea! And if I'm going to put a standpipe anyway... is there any harm in putting a durso in aswell?

    Siphon overflow design (pix)

(Not for my tank) Does this design make sense? I have no experience with siphon overflows... so let me know if this is okay. The red line on the top will be connected to a venturi line off a powerhead. Regardless of that, the baffles should maintain the siphon right? Thanks again all!

    Odd sump/fuge design...

Bigmac: That's something I've been mulling over. One minute I'm thinking, "I'd like the refugium as big as possible." And the next it's, "If I had a bigger skimmer, I wouldn't need one at all, let alone a big one!" Gracilaria grows best in shallow water, and bright light... so I might just go...

    Odd sump/fuge design...

Well, in order to ensure this idea doesn't impede the inlet flow at all... couldn't I just fit an oversized pipe/elbow going straight down? I do like this idea, as it gives me another couple of inches of security. (I don't plan on using it, but it makes me feel better!)

    Odd sump/fuge design...

Kipass: Thanks alot! Both excellent ideas... I now plan to do both for sure!

    Odd sump/fuge design...

Well... I'm going to have to place the skimmer on a stand, (as shown) to maintain an appropriate water level without lowering the level in the sump. The inside of the cabinet measures 27"... 24" of skimmer, plus at least 5" of platform = Too high. I CAN go with the ES8-1... 20" high, but 8"...

    Need help designing sump/fuge.

Looks good. I'm assuming there will be two inlets... one on the left, and one on the right. Correct? The only suggestion I would offer is to move the filtration media baffles over, beside the return section... so the water coming in on the right side gets skimmed before it gets filtered. Your...

    Odd sump/fuge design...

Bigmac: As for the ES6-2... I'd love to get one, but it won't fit under my cabinet :-( I was originally going to get the ES8-1, (still 20" high like the ES6-1, but 2" larger in dia.) but it just takes up too much room, as the base is much larger. I would have to add at least another...
