If I am not mistaken most RO units come with that device already installed.

Just to be safe I would talk to a supplier of RO units. My answer would be no. It will not bother the membrane but the unit must have an auto shut off. I have been using mine for 5 months with no issues. Just to be safe I would replace the membrane every year anyway.

No this unit goes between the tank and RO unit. You take the output from your RO to one side of the control box. The other side comes out of the control box to the tank.
