    Brooklynella or Lymphosistus?

Sounds like lympho to me. I have a Heniochus in Q right now with lymphocystis. No need to do anything for this. It occurs when fish have been stressed and damaged during collection and shipping. If you keep good water quality and feed it well, it will just go away on its own. This may not be...

    Hypo and Antibiotics

I think Beth gave you sound advice. BTW, it is pH and not salinity which affects the efficacy of many antibiotics. Since even under hyposalinity your pH should be over 8.0, it will not matter much what the salinity is. John

I have a mandarin, and ich.

Wicked clown, You might try feeding the mandarin flying fish eggs while in the treatment tank. I have heard some people had luck getting mandarinfish to take these. You can get them from anyplace that sells sushi. Also, If you could set up a small 10 gallon tank tank just for the mandarin and...

    naso tang has ich

Do you still have other fish in the display tank? If so treating the Naso will be pointless. If not you need to leave him in the treatment tank for at least 30 days for the Ich to cycle out of the display tank. Also, if you are using copper make sure you are using therapeutic levels for...

    Copper experiment

I wasn't trying to be cute. Maybe I am understanding this wrong. Colorni reports that tomonts kept at 14ppt for 48 hours fail to produce tomites. Is this forever? Or just until the tomonts gain favorable conditions for hatching? I understood it as all tomonts exposed to 14ppt for 48 hours will...

    Copper experiment

Ed, My understanding is hyposalinity does prevent the tomonts from producing active tomites. Copper kills the tomites once they hatch. Therefore copper does not address the cyst stage but hyposalinity does. John

I want to know what other people use as Reef Supplements in their tanks?

Man, You guys sure do like to dump alot of junk into your tanks. FWIW, I use a calcium reactor on my main display tank. There really is no need to add iodine, strontium, vitamins, etc to a reef tank. Calcium and alkalinity are the only things you should be adding, except of course food. Regular...

    Parasitic copepod?

I have had some new fish finally doing very well in a hyposaline (14ppt) q-tank now for 3 weeks. The hypo salinity started about 10 days ago. My sailfin tang about 4 days ago got a spot on his side. Large than an Ich trophont and dark brown. I have been watching it and it's not growing or...

Are damsel's too small for this ...

Why use fish at all? You can cycle by simply adding some dry food and using Turbo-start saltwater by Fritz. If you add the turbo-start every other day you will be cycled in 2 weeks. John

hypo .. can i drop salinity one night

"If you do run short, you want to make sure you do water changes(another clinical way to try and break the ich lifecycle) and remove the fish from the hyposaline tank, rather than bringing the hyposaline tank back to saline levels. " I guess I didn't read that part right. I see what you meant...

hypo .. can i drop salinity one night

Well, That's sort of right. Tomonts exposed to 14ppt for 48 hours will not produce any active tomites. So if the fish have been kept at 14ppt for 3 weeks, what is the point in removing them from the tank before the salinity is increased? John

hypo .. can i drop salinity one night

This is from an article by Dr. Dickerson in Sea Scope: "We have used low salinity to treat fish with Cryptocaryon here in our lab. We remove half the water in the aquarium and replace it over a 1 hour period with dechlorinated fresh water. The resulting salinity (approximately 15 ppt or specific...

Why not use Cupramine for QT?

"I'm sure you're well aware that 99% of university and other research done is not classified on-line for people to access" Easy now. No, I am not aware that abstracts can not be found. Full articles are difficult to find, but abstracts can be found in many places on the web. Would you mind...

Why not use Cupramine for QT?

I did a search on parisitology online and could not find any references to support hyposalinity for marine monogenean trematodes. Not saying they don't exist, but I would sure like to read them. John

Why not use Cupramine for QT?

I need to get that book. Noga is a graduate of University of Florida ( Go Gators! ) BTW....................that sounds like an anectdotal observation, not a verified scientific conclusion. So you can rest easy; I have gone back to Hypo in the Q tank. Not because I don't think copper would...

Why not use Cupramine for QT?

"Long term exposure to hyposalinity at 20ppt or less seems to be pretty effective. " Would you mind posting the reference? Not doubting you, just want to read it for myself. John
