How did you stock your refugium?

I just purchased one of those new "hang on" refugiums. I got the 24" long, by 18" deep, by 4" wide version that will hang on the back of my tank. I plan to put 4 to 5 inches of LS in to start, then try to scrounge up some LR rubble, and I would like to find a source of some Caulerpa if anyone...

    Jumpstart Pod Population?

NM Reef- Yes, we had this conversation 6 months ago, but I haven't been posting for a while, we just had our first baby. I'm an F117 pilot at Holloman. Nice Tang pic, do you have to upload that to an on line photo album and referance the url, or can you get it in there strait from your hard...

    Dawn dust affect: How imporant

Yea, when you buy those multi ballest systems, that's what you are stuck with, but you may be making this too complicated. If you don't want to use natural light (window) for your dusk/dawn effect, the easiest thing to do is go to Walmart and get a cheap ($10) 18 inch "grow light" from the...

    Jumpstart Pod Population?

Can anyone tell me a good way to get my Pod population back up to speed? I tried to keep a Mandrin about 4 months ago. It only lasted 2 months, and my Pod population still hasn't recovered. :o I'm not going to try to keep a Mandrin again, I just want to get my live rock and sand "alive"...

    Dawn dust affect: How imporant

The answer to the question of the corals is: "It depends." Some corals do different things in the Dusk/Dawn light, other corals couldn't care less. I recomend you research the corals you want to keep before making a decision. If you end up wanting Leathers and Mushrooms, don't worry about it...

please give me an idea of what fish to get next.

I agree with "nothing" but to better answer your question...What else is in your tank? For example, if it is packed with LR and has an established DSB, I would argue your not overstocked, especially if they are all as small as you say they are. On the other hand, if you have 1/2 an inch of CC...

Longest and shortest times you had an anemone?

1 year and a few days. It has trippled in size and still growing strong.

    anenome

There is no such thing as an "EXTREMELY hardy anenome." These critters need near ideal water conditions, the correct circulation, filtration, lighting, temperature, and tank-mates to survive over the long term. If you aren't sure how to feed them, I am going to guess you don't know what other...

    watts per gallon.

I guess I was expecting it to be closer to the 454nm peak the high temp MH lights all target. Do corals prefer that freq (454) over others or is any light in the 400-700 spectrum going to keep most corals happy? I guess the point I'm getting at is this: Why pay extra for the 12000K or 20000K...

    watts per gallon.

According to a magazine article I just read, the PAR spectrum is from 400nm to 700nm. Can anyone confirm that? It seems much broader than I was expecting.

    mh lights

8in is the min distance from the water, 12in is ok too. Fans help, the one I use is the icecap temprature controled 4in fan that increases its speed based on the temprature at the surface of the water-very cool thing! 175 watt, even 2 of them, is not strong enough for a 22in deep tank. If you...

    watts per gallon.

OK, Now we need to come up with some values that make sense… I have also heard that 175 watt MH is adequate for 12 in deep tanks, 250 for 18in, and 400 for 24 in deep tanks or more. Can I explain that with LP/SF? I will treat the MH light as a point source, even though some of the bulbs are...

    CARPET ANENOMIE

NNNOOOO!!! THAT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO ENOUGH LIGHT FOR A CARPET!!! Especially if that is a 72 gal Bow front tank, they are what, 24in deep or 30in? Either way, a carpet would starve to death in less than two weeks under those lights. For a tank that deep you’re only real choice is strong MH...

    Watts per gallon is wrong

axolotl- The only thing tht determins your lighting requirements are the animals you want to keep. The lighting you discribed would work for a FO or a FOWLR tank no problem. If you want to make it a reef, you will need to determine what corals you want to keep, then figure out your light...

    Watts per gallon is wrong

Jedimaster- Have you read through the thread "watts per gallon" with 21+ replies? I wrote a comprehensive discription of LP/SF and propose it takes the place of the Watt/gal rule. I think it is agreed that watt/gal is not useful, the trick is finding a replacement. I can repost my thread here...

    watts per gallon.

I agree watts per gal is not useful, but we need a replacement before it will just die. Let me see if I can put my degree in Physics to some use... To answer the question about PAR; it is Photosynthetic Available Radiation; also know as PAL (photosynthetic available light). It is the spectrum...

    lighting for torch coral?

Guys- I'm looking for some help on this question. Please, if you don't know, do you know where I can find out. I have searched my other www references, and they all say low to medium lighting, but none of them say if that is the minimum required for survival, or if that is what they prefer...
