I built sub-structure out of PVC pipe and elbows. It allowed me to make caves and holes easily. Using the pvc structure made it look like I have more rock than I really have.

I use an aqua lifter. It so worth the $20-30 to make sure everything works correctly when the power goes off.

I just went from a 46 to a 90 with 30 gallon sump. It took me a least a month to get ready. Everything went find and nothing died on me but it's always risky. Get the large tank going before playing with the sump. 1. prep all rock and sand (trash cans, flowing water, water changes, scrubbing...

I dump my water between two 5 gallon buckets until the salt is all dissolved. It also dissolves faster when the water is warmer.

IMO, it all depends the temp of the RO water. You needed get the water as close to room temp. as possible. I usually wait a day. Additionally, I mix the water (dumping from bucket to bucket) so the salt dissolves in the water. Your first of many, many water changes... have fun.

I had a problem with Oceanic salt dissolving at first but then I increased my velocity of the water when mixing and it went away instantly.

I have Fluval 304 for my 46g. It's overkill but it works great. Easy and simple. I use it as one my "powerheads." I would recommend the Fluval but I haven't used the Rena.

I agree. I had ls and lr with plenty of bacteria. Then i put the shrimp in and it spiked a little. 4 days later, everything was fine. I would rather throw a dead shimp in then throw a fish in the trash.

It works OK but nothing special. My Prizm Delx is recommended up to 100g so it works fine for my 46g set up. If I were you, I would look around for something else. But if its your last choice, its better than no skimmer at all.

Quick question: During the cycle, does everyone recommend changing water? I've seen postings saying to change the water during the cycle and threads that say wait until afterwards. Any thoughts?? What about the percentage of change? I've heard people say 40% and 10% twice? 10-15 %...
