Does mechanical filtration i.e. canisters and pads filters remove the same waste as the protein skimmers?

I acquired this poor guy with a used tank. When I got him, he was covered in green slime and looked really bad. He is still upside down but, with the better water quality in my tank, he looks to be making a come back. Any suggestions? :thinking:

Ok…my cc star keeps trying to eat the pencil urchin! The cc raps himself around the urchin and releases his stomach and starts to digest the urchin. Is this common behavior? I did not read anything that said the cc was predatory.

Do the ultraviolet sterilizers really work to eliminate algae? And has anyone had any luck with them? Or brand suggestions? Are they worth the $$$?

I have had a pencil urchin now for about three weeks and it is doing well. But it has completely cleaned off one of my lr and is starting on another one. By clean off, I mean the lr is now completely white. Is this a good thing, or is it depleting valuable bacteria or organisms for my tank?
