    Snail Death

I'm curious what else was in your clean-up package? If they include hermit crabs then they are likely killing many of your snails.

    live sand

I spent $30.00 for 150 lbs of Southdown sand for my 75 gallon. The stuff looks awesome. I then bought 2 detrivore kits to get the necessary copepods, isopod and worm population up to speed. Hello, I see you are knew to the BB. Sorry for the edit, but this BB does not permit posting about...

    Clean Up Crew!!

The 1 per gallon thing has been spawned by retailers. Marine biologists say you hermit crabs really need about 10 sq feet to their own. But to each his own. To me they look like giant ants and they eat all of my corralline algae.

    Inverts, Corals, & Fish

Marine biologists say 1 hermit crab per 10 square feet of floor and rock. These online stores are just out to make a quick buck by pushing all these hermits on us. I've removed mine by the way and use snails to clean the tank up.

    New Anemone

One point I would like to add. The emphasis should be on feeding the anemone NOT lighting. Whether it's proper circulation that gets food the aneomone through direct feeding or otherwise. Read on for Dr. Ron Shimek's take who happens to be a Marine Ecologist: "All organisms are on an energy...

    arrow crab

Arrow crabs are interesting. But should be avoided if you are going for a live dsb. You can read more about this on *******. Dr. Ron Shimek wrote about how they disrupt the sand fauna. [ September 18, 2001: Message edited by: MR . SALTY ]

What can west coasters use in place of South Down??

On another message board I'm on I was fortunate enought to catch someone throwing a "Southdown Party". Basically, one guy with garage space orders 55 bags from Home Depot (the minimum to get them to deliver it) along the way getting orders from everyone interested in getting some. Total cost to...

    Beach sand for a DSB?

There is absolutely no need for any subsurface sand structure such as a "plenum" or shelf. In fact such structures will reduce the sediment volume that is available for the bacteria.

    Beach sand for a DSB?

How would you boil out the toxins in the sand? Placing the sand in water than boiling the water? All you would do is kill the beneficial bacteria. The copper, iron, pcb's and God knows whatever else would be left in your tank.

    BurnNSpy et al, DSB question

Plan on buying a detrivore kit too as that "live" sand is probably not rich with life if any.

Elegant coral and Green button polyps question

I understand they prefer lagoons rather than the reef creasts, murky water rather than bright and being on the sand is where they naturally are found and thrive. Nutrient rich water moderately flowing are the most important parameters.

My first salt tank 15 gal eclipse system HELP!

"my local well known store has very successful 12 gallon eclipse systems running with corral and all, and only using the provided hood that comes with the system" You'll find that they probably put inventory in that deathtrap in the morning and pull them out at night after they close up.
