Leather only opens for a few hours a day?

I recently upgraded my skimmer and lighting(bulbs) and my leather coral only seems to open up fully for the first few hours the lights are on, then he pulls his polyps in. I only have my lights on for 8 hrs., is he just adjusting to the new bulbs? Just curious?

Coraline is turning white after skimmer change.

Ya I upgraded the lighting too...should have mentioned that. Everything looks much better, I was just concerned that the coraline isn't growing as fast or as colorful? I guess I'll never be happy as I used to hate how much I would have to scrape LOL! I just thought It would grow faster under m.h?

Coraline is turning white after skimmer change.

My coraline is losing it's colour and turning white since I upgraded to an aqua c from a red sea skimmer. It's just a small 29. gal. softie tank (Xenia,Shrooms, zoos ect.) So I'm not losing calcium. I put new bulbs in too just in case, but after a month I have noticed more coraline growth but...

    Any flatworm experts out there?

I have no idea where they came from, but they are driving me crazy! Any advice on how to naturally rid of these things, or do I need to use flatworm exit as a last resort? I have no nitrates or phosphates for what its worth, plus no fish, just coral, so there is no feeding. I'm trying to kill...

    battle of the LFS

Well since the blackworms come from muddy river banks, that are usually polluted, I'd never feed them to anything in a reef tank! The reason the store probably uses them is they arnt supposed to break down and decay. I'm sure they think they can get by not changing the water, but as you said the...

    Hair algae on new equipment?

I'm not too concerned, but more curious as why I have hair algae growing on my new powerheads and heater? I have no nitrates or phosphates, so what can they be living on? I'm sure it will die off, but as stated above....why? I hate h.algae!

Can you keep your nitrates below 5 PPM?

I was using a red sea prism skimmer on my 29. and I couldn't get my nitrates below 20. I switched it with a remora and zero trates ever since. It pulls more nasty junk out of the water in a day than the prism did in a week!

    new bulbs

Well I'm assuming you have at least soft coral? right? I'd keep the bulbs 50/50. And after 2 years the bulbs will make your tank look much nicer!

will this light work with my 55 gal?

I hate to say it but.......I bought some cheap p.c. bulbs for my orbit and after 6 months I got terrible algae problems do to the spectrum loss. I still run p.c. bulbs on my 29, but I honestly would go with m.h. or t-5 on your tank size as the p.c bulbs will run more (you'l need four at 30 bucks...

Can 10 month p.c. bulbs be causing hair algea?

I've been stumped why I have sudden hair algea and a slow decline of coraline. My water is good...no phosphates or nitrates. The bulbs are however about 10 months old. Could they be a possible culprit? I've been told I only need to change the bulbs every 16 months?....

choosing live rock. Fijii or caribean?

I'd definatley get the carribean as the formations in the rock itself provide more flow, and look better imo! Also it makes placing coral easier as they have more grooves and openings.

Why is powehead shooting out gusts off small bubbles?

About ever 20 seconds or so my powerhead is shooting out small bursts of bubbles. Any ideas why? p.s. it's a year old maxi-jet if that matters.

    Cyno outbreak after tank move.

Well I give credit to the skimmer only because I spent $170 bucks on it! LOL! I'm sure the new lights and and the new cuc helped as well. The guy at the lfs assured me that his awesome r.o water was the best so I switched that as well. Whatever it was the cyno took a hike! It peeled off and...

    Algae Problem!!!

Just been through all this. It will probably go away as the detritus gives way to new algea after being stirred up. just keep your tank params. normal and it will go away naturally...no worries
