    Moon Beams

I recenty purchased a Moon Beam light for my reef tank. It is a low wattage, low heat blue light designed to see your tank at night. Pretty cool, although I need another one for my 75 gallon tank. Anyone have experience with these lights. Can they be left on all the time? I run mine 24/7...

    Red Algea

I have a question regarding two types of algea I am getting in my tank. The first is a cotton ball shaped pink algea, the other is a maroon branchy algea. How can I get rid of the pink type? Any critters that eat it? Is the other algea good? Thanks, Mrdrago

    Carbon Filtration

I am using a magnum cartidge filter with Carbon in my reef tank. I read somwhere that carbon can remove trace elements. Should I not use this filter with a reef tank? The carbon I am using has litte to no phosphates. The tank seems to be doing fine. Thanks, Mark

    Dead Fish in Reef Tank

Striker, my water conditions were excellent. I hope the clicking sound I am hearing is not a predator. I have three soft corals, and two clown fish that are doing fine. <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />

    Dead Fish in Reef Tank

Stiker, I find your comments interesting. I was wondering if perhaps there was a pedator in my tank. I often hear a clicking sound, that comes and goes, but I cannot identify it. I certainly don't see anything that could be classified as a predator. Is there anything that lives in live rock...

    Wavemakers

Dad, let me explain my set-up a little better. I have one water circulation pump, with one outlet into the tank. I have it aimed so it disturbs the water tension at the surface. When you say "just add another power head" what do you mean? Can this be done with one pump. I am assuming I...

Water Purification & Salt Mixing Systems

Runaround, just to clarify and completely answer your question, I fill the bottles, then store them in my basement. I bring them out whenever I need to add water or make a water changes. Works really great.

Water Purification & Salt Mixing Systems

Runaround, not sure what you mean by aeration. I am making salt & fresh water for changing/topping of my tank. There is no need for aeration. This occurs once I add the water into the tank. On your second question, the spectra pure filter has a blue hose that ejects the 98% pure water. The...

    Wavemakers

I have a 75 gallon reef tank with about 50 lbs of live rock, and 20 lbs live sand. It's been set up for about a month and a half and doing great. I have one power head, and one magnum cartridge filter. I have heard about wave making equipment. I get good water movement, but curious if this...

Water Purification & Salt Mixing Systems

For anyone that is interested I thought I would share the system I have developed for creating water (salt & pure) for my reef tank. I have a spectra pure RO/DI system. I went to the local Culigan dealer and got 5, 5 gallon plastic water jugs. The kind that are used on water fountains for...

    Dead Fish in Reef Tank

JW,thanks for the advise. The first fish was a small fire fish, the second was a diamond back gobie. Both rather small and are missing. I presume the crabs & snails have eaten them since I have seen no spike in chemicals.

    Iodine & Magnesium

Should I be adding these two items on a regular basis to my reef tank? If so how, and how do I measure for them? Thanks

    Dead Fish in Reef Tank

I think two of my fish in the my reef tank died. They have disappeared. I have 75 lbs of live rock so I cannot find them. I also have 6 turbo snails, 6 hermit crabs. Will the crabs eat the dead fish? I am worried they will pollute the tanks, but read somewhere that the crabs will eat the...

    Green Leaf Like Algae

Thanks. It didn't look too bad at first. In fact, started with just a few cool looking strands. However, started to become an eye sore when grows to a forrest. Maybe I should not have pulled it out. I have some other forms of algae that grow slower and look great. Big green solid leafs...

    Reef Tank Additives

Thanks. I probably should have been more specific. I test for PH, Salinity, Nitrates, Nitrities, Phosphates, Calcium. However, I do not test for the other chemicals found in part A & B like magnesium, stronium, etc.. It is these chemicals that worry me. My calcium level is at 480.

Do you need to do a water change when you have a protien skimmer?

I'm no expert on the subject, and just getting my reef tank started after several years out of the hobby. However, I believe you should still change your water. I change about 15% every 4 weeks. See what others say have to say.
