This is not very slow. Most reef animals can handle fast increases in temperature but very few can handle fast drops in temp. It might not have made any difference but adding cold water and ice is probably not the right thing to do. Most of the animals that die in an overheat situation die from the rapid temperature drop, not the increase in temp.
Adding as many airstones as you can until the temperature gradually lowers is a much better remedy. The main difficulty with warm water is the lack of Oxygen so increasing water flow at the surface can help.
If it were me I would have let the tank cool to 90F one the first day and 85F on the second day and then a degree per day until at the regular temperature.

Sounds like to much work for the end result, simply turn that bottle of rum up and gulp. This will make dealing with the loss of a tank occupant much easier, but AA will lead you to believe otherwise.

I'll drink to that.

I don't know, whenever I go to the LFS I am always to preoccupied with grabbing my ankles to look for liquor there.

I think the majority of us here have had some or will have some major tank crisis at some point. It does suck. All you can do is your best and hope it never happens again. My motto??? Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Exactly, the only think I don't think I am prepared for is a tank leak. Crossing my fingers, I hope I won't ever have to deal with that. I've already had my experience with my skimmer shooting a seven foot fountain up the wall and onto the carpet, like ol'faithful. That was an experience, try cleaning up carpet and not being able to move the tank.

That exact thing happened to me just yest. while I was outside. By the time I found the flood, it had pumped out enough water to keep be busy swearing with the shopvac for an hour. Oh well. My floors got cleaned really well and I needed to do another water change anyhow. I usually prefer a more controlled environment for water changes though.

I almost had another experience with the skimmer but luckily I caught it in time. The o ring that fits underneath the collection cup had come out of place.

Well I’m going to check out my skimmer now, that’s for sure.

The better controllers are more reliable and cost more. The worth is up to you.
Set the controller at the temperature you would like to maintain and then set the heaters slightly higher. This will allow the controller (with the better electronics) to turn the heaters on and off. If the controller happens to malfunction then the heaters will use their internal controller to turn themselves off.
ie. Set the controller for 82F and set the heaters for 84F. Since the controller will turn the heaters off at 82F that's the temperature that will be maintained. If the controller fails then the temp will climb to 84F. If you see the temperature at 84F then check your controller.
The same (and opposite) applies for a chiller.

Thanks, does anyone know of any controllers that do duel heaters? I am going to need 2 so I was hoping for a single controller!!

You should only need a 99 cent electricial adapter to split the contorller for two heaters.

I'd say it was probably the change in the weather, my tank temp climbed too in the last few days because of change in temp outside. I'm sure the weather in Ohio is very similar to New York. I regulated my temp by opening a window and using a fan. A 29g tank can heat up very fast especially if you have a lid or top on it.

Good point, never really looked at it that way.
Thanks.

That is what I did, bought a 2 way splitter. I had a Won Bros controller stick on and caused my temp to rise to 97.6 degrees. I had another that wouldnt turn on. Anyway I found a controller made by Finnex. It was less than 40 dollars. I pluged the 2 way splitter into that. I then cut the controllers off the Won Bros heaters and put a new plug on them, the heating elements are good on them, its just the controllers go bad quickly. Anyway, I then pluged both heaters into the Finnex controller.
