yup, another new kid on the block, trying out this hella-cool hobby.
i have a 10 gallon tank, and about 10pounds of live rock in there. All the No3, No2, alkalinity, pH and SG are just about ideal. My ammonia is some where between 0-0.5. I am waiting for the live rock to do its thing.
in the mean time, i have a question on what is a good combination of "live-stock"
Fish Combo 1:
1 False Percula
1 Green Mandarin Dragnet (i asked my LFS to find one for me that eats frozen foods..)
1 Royal Gramma
-or-
Fish Combo 2:
1 False Percula
1 Bicolor Blenny or Shrimp Goby Tangaroa
1 Four line Wrasse
now the "cleaning crew"
1 Lettuce Nudibranc, and maybe a couple of snails.
i don't think i will get hermit crabs, crabs or shrimp as cleaners... i was told by a friend, that there is always a chance of them eating the fish!
as for coral, anemone and other invertebrates… I need to do more research on them.

that sounds like you are taking the right approach to this hobby i personally like the first set up with the dragonet but i would run my tank set up with fish and all before i add him and also have a refugium on the back to let copepods grow to keep him but other than that it sounds great!! good luck and remember research before you buy and HAVE FUN!!!

yeah, its a bit controversial, i read alot on how mandarins are better kept in a much bigger tank so they can get all their lovely live copepods

but if a mandarin just happy with eating frozen food, whats wrong with that? of course i would give it copepods too, to vary up their diet.
i can always cross it off the list if i can't find one :)

thanks tang, i will make sure to take the time, to look around for a healthy specimen.
This guy seems to have the right plane.
so hey another question, do i always have to wait for an ammonia spike to happen, then ammonia decline, for me to be sure that my tank is cycled? whats the average wait for an ammonia spike?
also, anyone know a good combo of coral/sponges for a 10g tank? i read that i can't keep anemones in such a small tank.

Usually ammonia will spike then go down then nitrites then nitrates then you wait a week to see if there is any more spikes and if all is fine start to add a CUC, then fish then corals.
My cycle lasted 1 month and I also have a 10g tank.
The corals you can keep all depend on your lights I have 2x40 watt pc lighting on my 10g and I keep a FS, favia, zoas, long tenticle plate, candy cane, and hairy mushrooms.
Go check out my thread if you need ideas.

SORRY...I disagree....It should not be a money issue, it should be a WHAT's RIGHT or not issue....

There is no real issue though. If hes able to feed it and satisfy it, its not like its a huge fish cramped up into a small tank. As long as theres food and hes prepared to constantly add in live food then its alright. It will become a money issue when he has to constantly buy copepods and what not.

CUC.... clean up crew... ahahaha...... took me way too long to figure that one out. Acronyms for newbies is so.... "fun" to figure out haha.
Katsafados, thanks for your follow up, gonna check out your thread tonight.
to meowzer, i agree with you man, if i can't find a mandarin that likes to eat frozen food, then he is off the list. its a good looking fish, but i don't want things dieing in my tank.
