it's not only the Mayan calendar that predicts a "dooms day" in 2012 but also the Sumerian texts and the I Ching both do aswell. if any are serious about researching this topic they should look into Zachariah Stichens work on deciphering the Sumerian texts/tablets. ( the 12th planet )
basically the Sumerians had extensive knowledge of the solar system including the existance of all 9 planets there orbits around the sun etc, way before telescopes were invented thousands of years ago. basically they say that we have/had a solar system of 12 planets the 9 we have now, the sun was counted as 1, a planet that currently is the asteriod belt was #11 and a currently unknown planet called Niberu is the 12th planet. it has an eliptical odd orbit that is 3800 years long. these texts claims Niberu slices right through or solar system and destroyed the planet that is now the asteriod belt between Mars and Jupiter. lots of youtube stuff on Niberu.
anyway this Niberu is do back in 2012 according to the Sumerian's. Conspiracy guys claim that by May of 09 those living below the equator will be able to see it in the night sky and by 2011 it will be as big as the moon. so if it's true in about 18 months ALL of us from anywhere on the planet should be able to spot it.
quicky my 2 cents on the Mayans. there calandar also accurately predicted many major events including there own demise by the spainard's. the Mayan's also had extensive knowledge of the solar system and how it works. built pyramids, and spoke extensively about being visited from the "gods"
one last thing on God/gods. many ancient cultures all over the globe depicted or wrote about being "visited" by gods. the Mayan's, Aztec's, Inca's. the Egyptian's, Sumerians, from Babelyon to ancient Greece all of these cultures were visited and INTERBRED with normal humans. in Greece it gave way to hero's like Hercules Perseus, and Achilles. Kings throughout Africa and the middle east were considered living gods. from the Pharoah's of Egypt to the serpent kings of Iran to the Emporer's of Persia, China and Japan. all religious texts even mention this interbreeding including the bible. in genesis it say the Nephilim ascended from heaven and chose the daughters of men and there offspring shown like a bright light. a entire book Enoch was removed from the bible by Constantine becuase it spoke of aliens, giants, etc. the Hindu Vedas tells of alien attacks, interbreeding, etc. the koran says the same things...... QUOTE=salty blues;2796730]Given all the current events(economic chaos, terrorism, energy woes, climate change controversy, etc), it is indeed very interesting if not chilling that our next US president will reign for the next four years leading up to Dec. 21, 2012, the date which has been named as the end of time as we know it.
This date is not mentioned in the Bible, so I don't necessarily believe that it will be the end of the world, but it does make one ponder what might be in store given that the extremely accurate Mayan calender stops at 12/21/2012.
There are other sources that predict this date as the day that something will happen, but exactly what only time will tell.[/QUOTE]

That was the Aztecs. The Mayan Empire thrived for over six centuries, that we have record of anyway. Yes, they still are in central America.
I do believe that the time left on this planet is limited but none of us will ever see the end of it in our lifetime.
You are correct. The Aztecs were conquered by the Spanish, as was the Mayan Empire.
