1st Reef Tank Diary (55g)

Thanks alot! The fish are on the way. I have my foxface in QT coming out of hypo. He'll be in the tank on Thursday! I can't wait to have some fish swimming around. I'm going to put a pair of Perculas in QT next.

keep calcium at 400 to 440 is good. Some people hit 500 accidently, but the corals are fine. But that's not recommended. Practice and learn how much your whole tank consume Calcium and dose it appropriately with a schedule. As the tank gets older and more corals added, the consumed amount of calcium will increase, so keep up with it.
Your tank is only 55g (same as mine). It means that you can only have a limited amount of fishes to add to your collection. So, don't go wild with the the adding and DO IT SHOW...... I know all salt water fishes are pretty and very irresistible, but you can't have them all with that tank size

Thanks for the advise guys. I will keep those things in mind for sure. I have sailfert test kits for calcium and ALK as well as Calcium and ALK buffers.
I hear what you are saying about adding fish SLOWLY. I know all too well the pitfalls one can experience adding to quickly. I'll keep everyone up on what's going on in the tank for sure...
What would you guys recommend using to glue a loose piece of Green star polyps to a new rock?

I would watch that Salifert Alk test, there have been several bad batches out there and it will read your alk to be very high, when it's not. I have one of those bad tests and it caused me some problems until I caught wind of the bad batches going around. Just use a second test to confirm your results.

I haven't glued GSP before, but I would imagine you can use SuperGlue Gel, it's what I use for my frags.

So, just use regular superglue gel? I was not sure if I needed to use any sort of special glue or what?
I'll pick up another ALK test kit to compare the results from the salifert kit. Thanks for the heads up!

I used SuperGlue Gel on all my zoos and birdsnest and so far so good. Some of the zoos have been stuck for over 5 months now. Why pay more for that "special" glue when the cheap stuff will work just fine. Many reefers use it.

green star polys will attach to any hard surface within a day. So no glue needed. Just tuck it into a lil crack or hole on a small piece of LR, and you will see them grow like wild fire.
Also, A healthy and well balanced system doesn't need buffer or ALK additives. Only have those on the shelves for emergency. Those additives are stricky for emergency ONLY. Keep in mind that if you ever start using those in the tank regularly, The tank is not in the right condition.

Thanks for the input on buffers and green star polyps. I moved the polyps to another rock and they seem to be happy.
As far as the buffers go, I have PH and ALK buffers but only have added the PH buffer once to get Ph to the 8.2-8.3 range. It has maintained ever since.
I do have Calcium additive that I add once a week by diluting in a cup of RO water. I do not have an auto top off system so I can't do that at this time.

Here are a couple of updated images.

Here is my new coral banded shrimp who it seems has taken a fancy to my green mushroom. He does not seem to mess with it, only sits on it all the time. It is like he is guarding it. I cannot see any damage he has done to it.

And a side view

Here are some shots of my new Hammer coral. This thing is beautiful! I was amazed that it was so full and healthy!

And here is my Foxface finally out of QT, hanging out with his buddy CBS.

hey bro great tank..i am actually paying off my cc's soon and hope to get one like exactly how urs is with black wood and 55g

Thanks alot!!
Quick question, do you guys think that the orange zoo is far enough away from the Hammer coral so that it will not get stung at night?
I know that they have tentacles that can stretch out at night and sting nearby corals. I just wanted some input on this.
Thanks

Here are some updated shots of my tank as of today. I have added a few multicolored zoos as well as fragging a xenia. I also picked up a toadstool leather a few weeks back. So far everything seems pretty happy!
