Hi, I'm little late to the party but welcome to the site none the less.
I use both nsw and fsw.
Nsw will always be little low on magnesium so you will habe to dose accordongly if you decide to go with corals.
Nsw is natural and in my honest opinon, we are trying to mimic the nature so what's not to like about nsw?
But it needs to be collected correctly on incoming high tide.
There are talks about unknown things coming in with nsw amd if you are scared, run uv on it for a day before you put it in.
My corals are loving nsw right now and whenever I can't get serviced, I use fsw as a back up.
But you need to use good salt to have good result. I use dd whenever I can afford it and reefcrystals regularly along with red sea coral plus.

Hi there,
I like to mix my own saltwater. I feel that I have more control over the process. Not that I am saying anything bad about natural sea water. But for me I want to have full control of what goes into my tank and making my own RO/DI water and using a quality salt mix gives me that.
Plus, (**Disclaimer alert** I have not researched the price of NSW too much) I would think that it gets pretty expensive to use nsw on the regular. I can get a 225g bucket of Salinity for under $90.00 and I already own a RO/DI unit. I know that my LFS sells premixed saltwater for $1.00/gallon, I would think that nsw cost more. I would rather spend the $$ on more coral and fish.

Hi,
I have never had the opportunity to get real sea water, I wouldn't trust the boxed stuff...Florida Joe lives near the ocean and he has a supply of the real deal, his tank is awesome.
If you are getting your SW from the ocean, don't get it from shore where all the yuck is being washed up onto it. If you are getting boxed, I wouldn't bother with it. I agree with Sweatervest on getting premixed saltwater and would mix my own, the LFS charges too much. IO Reef crystals is what I used...mostly because that is all the store by me carried. The regular Instant Ocean salt mix or the crystals.

In s.fl nsw is going for 50 cent for gallon vs 59 cents for fsw and if you have a buddy like mine who collects by hundreds of gallons per week then it gets a lot cheaper. like I said before, FSW is trying to imitate NSW and even in that perimeter, fish and corals thrive in their natural habit and I mentioned uv for the nay sayers but in my honest opinion, nsw is the way to go.

Ok here you go.
Pros and cons of NSW and FSW.
NSW
Pro -
It's natural from mother nature. We the hobbyists always try to emulate the mother nature so why not use what mother nature gives us?
From FL( where I'm at), it's cheaper here or you can collect water yourself for free if you know where to get it.
Parameters have been spot on for me every batch that I have tested.
Fish and corals love it.
Con -
You need to make sure it's collected at the right time and the place (incoming high tide)
Free floating particles. Never had this issue myself or my friends who have been using this for over several decades but once again you need to research if that company is reputable company and has a good habit of collecting things correctly.
If you are not sure, run uv on it for a day and it will be good as it gets.
NSW naturally comes little low on magnesium so be sure to dose accordingly if you are going coral heavy.
FSW
Pro -
It's clean
It's affordable
Cons -
Irregular batches giving you inconsistent water parameters so you really need to watch everything your putting in.
Conclusion.
In my honest opinion, best FSW is DD is they are evaporated NSW plus mixed compounds. Why pay so much for it when you can do it your self??
I use NSW for almost half a year now and have been dosing 2 part dose from seachem and my tank is doing awesome and parameters are always spot on.
Also, my friend who has used NSW for 20 years with gorgeous sps tank has told me this.
how many times have we read on these threads how someone got a batch of bad synthetic salt that has thrown there numbers off due to inconsistent salt mixes. I think often, but I dont hear this about NSW often? Worst I hear is salinity is a bit high? Temp was off when delivered. That's an easy fix!
I agree.
But this is your decision, you do whatever is cost effective and convinient for you.

I would scratch the yellow tang from that list, they need at least 6ft of swim space and a 75g only has 4, and they get nasty mean to other fish when they feel cramped.

LOL...My very favorite color is yellow. I have a 90g 48" tank. I wanted a yellow tang so much, but never got one because I was warned about how aggressive they got over their territory which is about 6ft, so no matter what, they are ornery fish. I have read plenty of posts from folks that are having trouble with them...doing the caged lion pace back and forth because they feel trapped, and being just plain mean to the other tank mates. Then I discovered the beautiful Lemonpeel angelfish, I couldn't have been happier with the little yellow fellow I had. That was the only fish I actually miss after switching to seahorses from a reef.
I have been waking up in pain early in the morning when my meds ware off, the pain just wakes me up...so I get up and take the medication (I can't tolerate narcotics so I don't have strong meds) and until it kicks in, I stay up. So basically for the last 4 days, that means I'm up at 3:00am and don't go back to bed until around 5:30am, then I can sleep to 7:00am when I get up to begin my day. The medicine I take just won't last long enough to let me rest all night.

Those angels are probably going to box it out!
McCoskers & Carpenters are so similar I would replace one with a Melanarus Wrasse. Get the male he is beautiful.
Anthias should be housed in groups of 1 male for ever 3-5 females. It's always recommended to keep them in groups.

my yellow tang couldnt be more peaceful. it has NEVER nipped at any fish (hes the biggest in my tank). the key to keeping aggression down is to keep them well fed on nori.

I heard most tangs are really only argerissve with there own kid
Sorry bout the bad spelling been along week
it depends on body shape.
IE- a yellow tang is going to be more aggressive w/ a purple tang since they have similar shapes. that yellow tang will be less aggressive w/ a blue tang, since they have different shapes
ttle at first, but they wil be fine in the long run, most likely. people can successfully keep tangs with the same body shape if introduced at the same time or if the tank is large enough to happily house the fish.
