a new shark attack

I have never been to an ocean beach that does not have 'swim at your own risk' posted multiple times. And i have been to a few ocean beaches in north, central and south america. So doing something risky gets a human killed and the humans want blood in return. Thats like McDonalds telling you that there coffee is hot, then sueing them because there coffee is hot. A warning is not good enough.
I know all these tri athletes knew that risk was part of the game, but all these over protective parents and media wanting the shark dragged out and strung up dead for all to see is over the top. Send your kids to the pool if you are that worried about it.

What I don't understand is that (I learned these geeky facts because I am a marine bio major) White sharks hate the taste of human flesh. So did the shark bite the man once across both legs, or come back again? I didn't catch that. Also, it's really rare for White sharks to attack someone in a group, unless he was swimming far behind or ahead of people.
You are 30 times more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a shark.
You are more like to be killed in a bicycle accident than attacked by a shark.
You are more likely to choke to death on a toothpick than be attacked by a shark.
That being said...I'm still a little wary when I'm surfing here...especially since I'll be surfing in San Diego next week.

seriously though this really is an unfortunate incident. The odds are very low of being attackedby the shark but for the people who want to catch and kill sharks in the area that is rediculous because you can't know which one did it. Plus think about a shark it has no hands all of its senses revolve around a predatory function so how do they investigate something with their teeth obviously. It would be like getting bit attackd by any other bug/animal do you just go around destroying them all. It really shines a ligt into our mentality about things we don't understand or fear. I know no one mentioned anything likethis here. The reason I bring this up is that my roomate mentioned this the other day and his response was I hate sharks we should just kill them all.......I was very angry and concerned about how he could say something like that.

Me too...god don't get me started on the decline of marine life due to humans.

nature is defined by its efficiency. every animal on this planet serves a purpose, including sharks, mosquitos, etc.

I've always thought it takes some real cajones to swim out to the person being attacked by a shark to drag him/her ashore.

I know! How brave...

I think we all would do it, personally. You see something like that and it's just like instinct for most of us.

Actually the dolphins will. We saw two the day it happened. I have a friend that happens to be a surfer freak. He told me that seals will leave you for dead and head for the beach while you distract the shark. A dolphin, on the other hand, will often get between you and the shark, helping you back to the shore.
That day was the first time we had seen dolphins in San Diego county since moving here. (except at seaworld)

I know, I've heard that! Another reason I love them so much.

I've actually seen a few dolphins kill a great white on the discovery channel!
I just went to Seaworld in San Diego for the first time last month and loved it! I just moved to CA so it was new for me.

Silver members here. Did you feed the bat rays? If not, YOU MUST RETURN.
ps...when you get there go directly to the gift shop at the exit and buy one of those HUGE mugs. They refill them for $2. It pays for itself the second time you get thirsty. Same with popcorn buckets. Get a refill with cotton candy for like $2. And you don't have to finish the popcorn first!

My daughter got to light the SeaWorld Christmas tree. Here are some pics.

Cute, that's so awesome! No I didn't get to feed them, just pet them. I got to feed the dolphins though! Some bird came out of nowhere and took one of my fish, though!
