A Poll For the New Hobbyists

Ok, I am glad we have this friendly discussion going. For me I don't have any issue with questions asked over and over. I just keep a text file and copy and past the answer.
Now I have a prob, you see, I am lazy and will only read 5 or 6 posts if it's all friendly gabbing I move on to the next thread without giving any response to the OP, I figure someone must have gave them the help they needed. Now if it is as funny as the last few post I might read on.
So I wanted to see how most noobs felt about all the extra posts and as you can see there are only 5% that need help and are not getting it and there is 23% that would like more help finding the answers.

OK GEO...I have to ask....is it the "chatting" that upsets you? Cause I am very guilty of that....BUT.....after 2 years, a lot of us have built a sort of relationship.....so we say hi...tease...and kid around in various threads.....I hope it is not out of hand...I know it use to be...I'll admit that....but things have changed....
I really like this forum, as I go to no others, and would love for people to feel like they belong ...not as a customer....as a "friend"

No no, I like the chatting, but I am also just to lazy to read 15 post to see if the OP got the answer. So I figured I would poll the noobs to see how they felt. You know I have hijack some threads in my time here and felt oops I will try and not do that.

This started because I had read a thread where the OP did not feel they were going to get the info they needed, and when I looked back I realized the thread was hijacked by some professional giber jabbing.

Yes me too. (ZOOS). For a while I was on SWF and seen where someone would ask a question and get battered by the the more experienced hobbiest. One time I asked a question and got told rather bluntly go to this page and figure it out. Well at that point I left SWF and went to another site. My wife stayed, kinda missed her. :)
Now I have found two people I can TRUST on SWF and I mostly PM them. Now I just read and sometimes laugh but hey this hobby is like nursing, they eat their young.

Honestly I do get upset at times.....I get upset when you ask opinions, and you get tons of looks, but no opinions and everyone has one!!!!!!

Sometimes people are in a hurry, like myself when I hve to run to work..pointing someone to a page is not saying go figure it out...it means the info is right there and better explained. Unless you were rude I can't imagine someone being short with you. I assume you don't TRUST me because I never got a PM from you. Don't be a ghost always in the background..I promise we don't really bite.

maybe not as bluntly as "figure it out" but I do like to point people to different things even after giving them my opinion. Helps to show people where I get my info from and where they may look in the future. I know some would rather just come here for the answer, but if it is a learning experience I feel people need to learn how to look for themselves also.

If you PM someone and you have a really good question no one else gets to benefit from your question. I like reading other peoples questions and I feel i learn a lot from them. And as for there is a lot of people looking at a question with no answers maybe like me people are just interested in the thread but don't have the answer. I like to refer back to some of the books I have read and sites I have visited to help if I can but would hate to lead someone in the wrong direction so sometimes I just wait to see the answer.

All of you have great and logical points however, well... no however. Being in this hobby is rather intimidating and frustrating. When one reads some of ya'lls posts (IMO) it's amazing at the vast of knowledge before you. I personally love to learn different things and to be honest the ONLY reason I got into this hobby was because of my wife. She is amazing with this stuff and I had to learn alot just to get to her level. She recently had to hypo her tank and it KILLED her, not literally, when she lost fish. I hurt with her. So she was on SWF daily reading and learning and spunging information. I personally am very proud of her cuz now her tank is up and even more awesome than before. Well, it helps that she got some pretty freakin awesome aquarium lights for Christmas from a certain guy no names mentioned (me me me) Lol.
I didn't mean to insult anyone on SWF (Flower). Since I have been back on SWF it has gotten alot better and less intimidating.

It seemed like several months ago the tone of the forum had changed. There were several snide remarks (by multiple people) and threads/questions that were more frequently ignored. There were complaints that people weren't participating but when they did they were ignored. I'm sure it didn't help when the format of the formum changed because it was frustrating and difficult to reply for a while, but that wasn't the only issue. Personally I still read the threads and used the search function ALOT, just didn't really want to participate. It just felt like if you weren't part of the "in group" of people you were left out, not real welcoming to newbies. I'm not directing this to anyone person, so please no one take offense, I'm just throwing my thoughts out there. The last few months it has been feeling much more friendly and a place for open conversation again. Personally, I still think this is the best saltwater forum out there!
I also like the chatter, that is how relationships are formed between members. As long as the questions get answered eventually.
