Yes you'd have to cut them. Here are some other ways:

cool, I am going to do something like those bottom two pics. I'd be afraid that the tabs wouldnt hold up all of the weight of the algae when it gets thick and wet. Looks like he does ok though.
I'll post some pics of mine when its done, gotta find someone with a dremel wheel
