Barracuda

I was horrified to see yesterday that my LFS was selling a barracuda. I asked one of the guys there why they had a barracuda and he shrugged and said, "I don't know anything about them. We make money off it." They also had a flowerhorn, I think it's called, a giant $800 FW fish in an 8 gallon tank. It could barely move. I was so angry, I almost cried. Isn't this irresponsible?

yes it is but they do make money off of them, i recently saw 5 baby barricudas at one of my lfs's last week... and around 3 teens (1-2 feet) at another over a period of time

Barracuda do not belong in the trade . In my opinion even the extremely large custom home tanks are still too small . These fish belong in the ocean or at least in public aquariums where the tanks are in the 100's of thousands of gallons range .

Could it have been a FW red tail barracuda (Acestrorhynchus falcatus)? Those are actually pretty awesome fish. They only get about 10-12". I've owned a couple during my fresh water days.

No, it was SW. It was with a lionfish and a powder blue tang.

They belong in the ocean!!

There are all kinds of fish that really shouldn't be sold. But, the number of fish lost during capture, shipping, holding tanks, more shipping, meds, QT, cramped quarters, etc, etc; makes the number of fish lost by hobbiests seem quite small. I really don't see much difference between that barracuda; which an expert can successfully keep, and the tuna I had for lunch.

Grilled or just a tuna salad sandwhich ?
Just a sammich; orange roughy for dinner though! Delicious fish--broiled with a little tarragon!
BTW Barracuda is an excellent fish to eat; but the bigger ones can carry ciguatera poisioning.

I never heard of them; but googled them and they sell for under 10 bucks; maybe the sign at the lfs was supposed to say $8.00. Incredibly ugly example of a genetically engineered fish, IMO. I never have seen any man-made fish, FW or SW that was as pretty as the the one's made by nature. When I raised FW angels & discus to support my SW addiction; I had a hard time selling the wild strains, but sure liked them better. Most of today's discus look plastic to me; the same with the man-made varieties of SW clownfish. I know lots of folks love them, and I must be nuts, but we can all have an opinion.

I thought that at first too, but I asked them and they said it was "show quality" and so it was $800. Poor fish.

Don't be so upset, these fish are probably so inbred that they have no idea when they should be uncomfortable.

I started crying, you should have seen him, barely able to swim. It's so unfair. They care more about profit than the animals.

Of course they care about profit, its capitalism and the entire industry wouldn't exist without profit; neither would this forum. Any dealer that doesn't take care of an $800 fish sure won't last long. Easy for me to say; but I doubt that the fish is really that "unhappy" ( an emotion I really don't credit fish with having.) IMO, fish care about 3 things: eating, not being eaten, and reproducing. If all he has to do is sit there and eat; I doubt that he's really that miserable. Miserable fish=stress=disease=death=lost $ to that capitalist pig dealer.

The ciclid lfs near my house has some breeding frontosas for 3 grand. I'm telling you sw fish are beautiful compared to fw fish.
