Blue Sponge in Refuge???

OK, this is a pic of my sump/fuge
Attachment 221354
My question is about the big blue sponge...I have a 225g tank with a mandarin...I still have lots of pods cause I see hundreds of them every night.
I also have pods in the fuge...I don't think they can get to the dt thru the blue sponge though...
How necessary is that sponge? I have a piece of eggcrate in the section with the return pump, and I have a piece of polyfiber covering the eggcrate.
Would that be enough to stop what the blue sponge stops from getting back up into the dt??

Do you have filter floss after the blue sponge?
So water goes......blue sponge-fliter floss-return pump.

The main filter stuff is in the tray..above left...I have micron felt in there.
YES...attached to the egg crate that you are seeing in front of return, I now have a piece of polyfilter...(added when I was having a clarity issue)

Yes, I did. The pods are going to float or do their best to swim but, if your pulling water through the floss then I would think that the pods would inevitably be pulled into the floss.
On a side note, the pods don't have too much of a chance making it past the pumps impeller alive.
IMO you best bet is to have the rock work set up in the DT to make, uhmmmmm pod factories.

LOL... I have lots of rock, and lots of pods in DT...BUT I know there has to be a way to benefit from the pods in your fuge.

I didn't get the memo about this party, what up with that!

It doesn't look like you even need the blue sponge? I would just keep the egg crate pad rig in there...

OK...I think I am going to remove the blue sponge tomorrow, and keep the eggcrate with the poly on it before the return pump...The only thing is I see some really nice big pods on the sponge....Anyway to get them off or out of it without killing them?

Take the blue sponge out and tap it against your hand or the side of the sump over the water and a lot of them will fall off into the water. Leave the sponge out for a while and see how dirty the poly filter pad gets. If you don't see any perceptible change take the poly filter pad and eggcrate it is attached to out.
At that point you may have to increase the cleaning of your pump. Some have a sponge inside them on the pulling side, and this may get plugged up and lower your gph. I think the big test is taking the blue sponge out though. That to me looks like it would be the biggest gph restriction there. If everything stays in the fuge after removing that you are probably going to be okie dokie.
