I'd replace that and monitor it for a while without the sponge. How does the intake for the pump look?
But that's just me.

Okay how does the intake look? Is it filled with stuff like algae, dirt etc. etc.? How does water get in, through a screen, a sponge, or just get sucked up with the opening that is shown in the above picture????

Okay sounds good then. Just replace that pad thingy and the eggcrate like you had it before and let's see what it looks like in a few days without the sponge there. I can't remember and I am not gonna go looking but do you have a filter sock on the tube that comes down from the display? Does the Eggcrate over your fuge still have a filter pad on it?

NO filter sock, and the tray that sits on top of the fuge has a 50/50 micron pad in it
The tubes from the dt go right into the protein skimmer section

Yes I keep one there all the time, I rinse it every 2-3 days, and I still have that filter bag with carbon in there too.
Just rinsed it a few minutes ago too

well the main concern is keeping large things out of the return pump. Seems to me with the pad on top of the fuge and the fuge itself it may prove to be that you don't need that pad just before the pump. But lets monitor it far a couple of days to see what collects on it.
Bang most of the pods off the blue sponge did ya?
How did that look by the way, was it full of gunk? How ofter did you clean it?

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...well except when you squeeze it...LOL...That I cleaned weekly...It's a pain tooLOL
The only thing that I would worry about getting into the pump would be maybe a snail...everything else in minute...a strand of chaeto maybe...but can that hurt it?
I do not know how many pods I just killed....
I did what I had to...yes I banged it off, but I didn't see anything on it or falling off (except chaeto pieces)

If you are worried about that put something like this over it. Just inspect it at water change time to ensure it is open and doesn't have any gunk in it.
