Building my 56 gallon Column reef tank

I have edited the pic with my thoughts, some one correct me if I am wrong. I also added your first fish Sparty, hope you like him. He is a painterfish.

As far as hijacking, its ok with me. More knowledge the better. With my aiptasia, they didnt jump off the rock, but that had to have been cool to see. I think mine have succumbed to the aiptasia-x. It worked just as the instructions said it would. Those buggers thought they were being fed and put their tentacles around the syringe. I then proceded to "glue" their mouth shut, LOL B@$t@rd$! Once they realized it wasnt food, they retracted into the rock and I have not seen them out and about in about 7 hours now. I sure think that this is the end of them.

Thanks for the pic Meowzer! I can honestly say that I have not seen that stuff for sale in any of the LFS that i have visited. It looks like I might have to order it if the aiptasia-x doesnt work. And yes, this is where the results are posted. I think i found a baby aiptasia that I get to glue shut tonight, cant wait!

I have to admit, i hate killing these things as they are living animals that deserve to live. But if they are going to be a nusance, time to go now!

I kill flies, mosiquitos, ants, and other nusance pests. But I am also aware that these things outnumber the humans on this planet like 10,000 to 1 or some really outlandish number. Killing 10 flies doesnt put that much of a dent in their species population. Remember, we have a very animal loving/friendly house. Oh yea, that cat we were fostering, there were complications with the pregnacy and she had 4 stillborn kittens. My wife and I were brokenhearted even though it wasnt our cat nor were we planning on keeping any of the kittens. Well I know i wasnt planning on it, but I am sure my wife was, LOL.

So because of this, we have adopted a new kitten into our home. We havent named him yet, but he is a playful little guy. Every time I do a water test, he jumps on my back to get a closer look at the tank. I'll have my wife tell me where the pics are so I can load one up for you all. And yes, the alergies are working and I am loving life through a cloged runny nose, watery ichy eyes.

AWWWWW...what happened to the Mommy cat? Is she looking for her babies

Not really. We have an appointmen to get her fixed on sunday and then return her to the shelter for adoption. I went into the room on friday, before the badness happened, and went to pet her. I started at the head and she was fine with that. When i went down the back and to the tail, that is when she clawed me and bit me on the hand. I havent seen the cat since, nor do I plan to spend any more time with it than I have to. Not that I hate animals, but once you bite me, its all over for mr. nice guy. espically for cats.

Edit : Pic of the big duster

Meowzer - Yes! It is a Bristle Starfish! I have a TON of them all over my rocks. I feel bad though because from 8am - 7pm I have my 2x 10000k 65w bulbs and 2x 65w actinic bulbs on... from 7pm - 8am I have only my 2x 65w actinics running. Well, my 7pm light shift started and I noticed all the aipastia's... so around 7:30 I turned the light back on and looked at the rock... I noticed he was starting to come out... so I'm assuming they're a noctournal type fish... well as soon as those 10000K lights came on he looked like he was rather bothered and went for cover in his rock hehe... I feel like I had tricked him. With that being said... you can see that there were aipastia right next to it... I put the juice on them and tried to avoid the starfish. However, if it gets on the starfish... will it kill it?
I know I will (if I haven't already) get some juice on them since the things are all over... will it kill them?

Monisour - Thank you for noticing my fish! All these "Experts" claim they know all about the fish. YET they completly missed my painterfish! Gosh, it's good to know somene cares about my top of the line million dollar fish in my tank!

Just kidding everyone

Nope, I was talking about the teeny itty bitty white ones as well. I had one of them and then I have a TON of the big brittle ones. I love them :)

So back to my question, how hard is it to move one of the regular dusters off of the rock without harming it?

Well then, I wont be moving the guy then. I just hate like heck to tell everyone to crane their necks to look under the rock to see him.

LOL...That is sooooooooooo cute.....I hope he doesn't slip
claws down the back yikes
Its not the slipping down the back that hurts. Its the landing on my back. He uses his claws to catch himself. Ah, but what can I say? I watched a movie late tonight and he got up on my chest and was purring so loudly i couldnt hear the TV. then he did the whole "love you, love you, you too" to my face. While I paid for the dander in my eyes and nose, it was too cute. My wife picked a winner with this cat. Just hope his destructive tendancies goes away with time.

Well, it appears that the aiptasia-x has worked on 2 of them. The "bubble tip" one appears to be trying to make a comeback. Its not looking like the rest, dead. The bubble tip one is out of the hole. Its head is all clumped together and the tentacles arent out. But the other 2 i squirted definatly are dead, I am calling it a victory. So far the kill count is as follows:

Lemon Juice - 2
Aiptasia - 3 (2 of which got lemon juice)

Any word on that snail in the ID thread?

pH 7.8
SG 1.024
Ammonia .25
nitrite 0
nitrate 5

Water test this morning was promising

80 degrees F
SG 1.024
pH 7.8
Ammonia .25 ppm
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5

2 tests in a row with .25 ammonia. I am still baffeled as to where its going as throughout all of my testing, the nitrite never moved off of 0.

BTW, what kind of shrimp do you feed seahorses? I think i have a ton of those in my tank from when I put the algea in my sump. I see them all over the place scurring around, fighting with one and other, and what appears to be shells from when they molted floating around. Is it mysis shrimp? I gotta google them to see.

Look up amphipods

Seahorses will eat them, but mysis frozen is good too
The seahorse reference is because I saw them at the LFS eathing these things that are in my tank. Mysis shrimp are too big to be these things. It could be the pods. Will mandarin eat these things? Or will all my other fish eat these things and there wont be any left in the year it will take before the mandarin is in the tank?

How do hitchhikers live in my tank? I have no clue. I have found something like 4 snails, these pods, a few clams, 4 urchins, tons and tons and tons of feather dusters, the mantis shrimp died when we took him out, a few bristle worms, and lord knows what else is in there. The ammonia has dropped to .25 and has stayed there for atleast 24 hours and I hope it is there or less tonight when I test again in 2 to 3 hours.

As an asside, I am getting brown algae growing on the sand and on the tank walls. Is this good or bad? Why dont the urchins eat this algae? What does eat this algae? I had the brown algae in my daughters FW tank and we got an ocelerais (? no clue) and he went nuts eating it all off the glass in one night.

Daughter found another new hitchhiker today when cleaning the glass, its in the ID thread.
