well I posted a thread because I had found a mantis shrimp in my tank. Thanks for the help with what to do on trapping him etc...
I didnt get around to doing that yet but after I saw some youtube videos on them, I knew I had to get that thing out of there quick!
So when I woke up this morning and saw the mantis in one of the rocks that looked easy to get at, I moved around the reef a bit and then grabbed the rock out of the tank. I covered it with a towel for a few minutes and when I uncovered it he was out of the hole. I got my net slowly and smashed him with the handle!!!!!!!!

Cool! I did the same thing last week with a banner fish! Worked like a charm.

yeah cranberry...even I have some morals!
Just to clarify
this... <_< is a dirty look. Salt nate has a banner fish... thus my choice of fish to pummel. I have 4 mantis', this is a reef site, that's like going to a cat forum and asking for recipes.
And you SO just jumped onto my "not-so-cool" list.

i think dying by a quick blow to the head is about as humane as it gets.

my bannerfish will be next on my list if it starts killing my other inhabitants

wow, you really are offended!
To be perfectly honest, I never even knew people kept these things. I read horrible stuff about them and then watched them destroying reef animals and decided to get rid of it quick.
what should I have done? anyways on the videos I saw they are pretty badass, but not in my reef.
please forgive me...i thought it was the cocoroach of the sea or something!

wow! that peacock is rad! are those colors real?
mine was about 3/4 of an inch long and brown everywhere. Actually did look like a cocoroach!
What can you house them with?...cause i am going to be starting a 10 gal. nano.
also, when you say interactive, what do you mean? what do they do? do you have to feed them live food, like i saw on youtube? it was like feeding a snake a rat or something(talk about inhumane!)

peacocks are a smashers damsels or clownfish make good tankmates
I have a domino damsel in my mantis tank with no probs
you do not have to feed them live food I use raw shrimpsoaked in selcon and some other stuff.
they do however need to smash so they can molt successfuly so I use empty shells and really stuff the shrimp in so they have to break it up.
and interactive when your in the room they are watching you go to the tank and he swims to the top and wants food or tries to chase you away

Funny how everyone thinks I'm a guy. I even thought my name was kindda feminine... cranberry..... pink and a berry.
Those colors are true to life.... that's how they got their common name. But they do have a range of colours which also include brown. A peacock is too big for a 10 as already said.
If you actually LIKE your damsel or clownfish, I would not put them in with a mantis of any sort. There's a risk he will kill. After living a happy life together for a year, my G. chiragra killed it's damsel.
The pics above are of my O. scyllarus and P. ciliata.
