Camera Question Again, Nikon?

I posted a question about the best camera to get around 500 dollars a couple of weeks ago but the ones suggested that I liked were beyond that range. i've been doing research and I'm ready to buy this weekend. I have decided I want a Canon or Nikon. The one that I like the best just from the feel of it and the "feeling" I get is the Nikon D40? at Circuit City which retails for $464, at least right now. Any thoughts on this? I wanted a RebelXT but dont seem to be able to find one in price range. I know I'm going to hear that they have been updated but 500 is my absolute Max! No more than 550 seriously. What do you guys think

i got my d40 few months ago and its a blast, you can read all the reviews you want, but go to a store that has both the nikon d40 and the canon and see which one feels better in your hands, i have point and shoot canons and love them, but this d40 feels better to me then the canon did, just a personal preference. its light to carry on hikes and slap on a polarized filter on it and the outdoors photos are incredible, as for the 6MP don't worry about it unless u plan on doing billboards.
as for taking pix of the tank which I'm guessing u plan on doing the kit lense 18-55 is ok, not the best, it will do at first. i just picked up a 50mm lense for another 50$ (used) and its unbelievable!!!
just my opinion, hope it helps...

Canon FTW!
i got a canon xti about a month ago and its awesome.
if both cameras seem the same to you, just know that canon offers a lot more lenses and is the offical name brand cameras for the NFL.

·Rechargeable Battery NB-2LH
·Battery Charger

I was dead set on the Nikon but now may be leaning since I saw that costco has that great deal, the closest one is an hour away so I'll check the internet or ask my friend that lives near to get if for me (maybe). I'll let yall know what I do. My camera now does a great job but there is a scratch on the lens and I just want better. BUT I went out last night with some friends and one is a professional photographer and she uses the Nikon d80? I'll add some good ones from what I've got Kodak easyshare:

I shoot with a Nikon D80 and couldn't be happier! It's an absolutely GREAT camera and Nikon, IMO, is way better than Canon.
If I were you, I'd hunt around for deals on the Nikon D40.

Nikon makes an awesome camera and top rate lenses. The D40 is an excellent top of the line camera, and what is great you can step up to higher end nikon cameras with the same lenses. If you want a cool camera that would be PERFECT for shooting your tank, look at a D3. (don't it is WAY to expensive) but with that one you can actually type in a manual Kelvin tempurature of your lights. hehe. It is kind of tricky to set your white balance on our wierd 10,000 K lights.

D40's are just a waste and they are the bottom of the line. no internal focus motors on them, 3 focus points, no bracketing. They are just a crappy P&S camera with a lens mount on them to change lenses. You have to buy lenses with internal motors in them none that are the s-c-r-e-w drive because they will not have autofocus.
Anything before the new D300 and D3 nikons SUCK at high ISO noise. I personally cant stand the layouts on the Nikon bodies. they throw way way to many buttons on it and feels like you need 3 hands to work it all.
I would avoid stdreb27 advice. He doesnt seem to know much saying a D3 would be good for tank shooting..ANY camera is good if you know what your doing.

If you can't figure out a d40 nikon I don't know what to tell you. That is as straight as it gets, unless you use the disposible camera.

HAHAHAHA..you said it yourself..its a disposable camera. I think i am a little more advanced in this area then you.
Like I said you gave awful advice saying someone needs a pro body to take a good pic of the tank. Anyone can get great pics even with a P&S if they understand the camera, its limitations and how to use it.

hmm, you are the one who can't use a d 50 without 3 hands.
I didn't say she needed a d 3 I just said it was a cool camera.

no Nikon's layout is just AWFUL...My 1D Mark II is perfect. its not a huge jumble mess of buttons and makes changing settings fast. So now its a D50 you cant even get the camera right. The D50 even being older is MUCH better then a D40..atleast its not a crippled little camera.

lol so you're going to try and compare a 500 dollar camera to a 3000 dollar camera.

Sorry I own a D50.
The only real stupid thing Nikon did was Name the newer camera a lower number.
I've got to run, I'll get back with you.

no the D300 and D3 layout are just as awful..my buddy has a D300 and the buttons are all over the forsaken place. I wouldnt compare the D40 to anything but a P&S

Just so it is clear, I said you should look at the D3 because it is a cool camera. There are tons of neat toys. (not implying she should buy a 5 k camera) notice the "way to expensive." I don't see how suggesting that someone look at a cool camera is bad advice.
As for the D40 and D50 which have very simular layout. The only thing I don't like is the single wheel for ISO and Shutter speed. But with priority shooting function that isn't a problem.
If you are looking for a good entry level camera a D40 is an excellent choice. (just buy a couple cool lenses and you'll be good to go)
And you can't actually expect a cannon guy to give you "unbaised" evaluation of a Nikon. It just doesn't happen.
