On the track your reaction time and launch is what makes or breaks you from posting good numbers.
How hard you can "hook up" to the track at the launch determines how heavy you can get into it to have your top speed at completion.
Top speed is almost irrelevant when on the track. It is a urination contest among you and your friends but it alone does not win the race. Reaction times, and actually understanding the infamous christmas tree lighting cycles and roll out for your specific vehicle is huge at the track.
It does help if your car can go fast...
I was at an open race a little while ago, and this guy decided to race his stock f-150. He won his first heat because the other guy's car died and they got a time. Since they spot you the difference between you car and other other guys, he almost won the whole night in a stock f-150. It was funny.
