Live sand first of all just looks better...much more natural look. And, it doesnt trap nitrate (which could spell disaster in an aggressive tank) and live sand actually uses up nitrates (well the critters inside it do). So I would have to say LIVE SAND!! And, if it costs 10 bucks more than CC, so what, take the jump! You WONT regret it!

NOOOO!!!! Not unless you can collect it at least 300 feet off the coast where it wouldnt be polluted, and even then, you risk the chance of introducing pathogens and diseases and stuff that you DO NOT want in your tank.

They harvest from the ocean (at least some do) but it goes in their facilities for MONTHS, possibly YEARS, so they can determine if it is pathogen free or not. Also, some will place it in large tubs and put the tub in a dark room or cellar or something and not EVER open the door for about a year, possibly more, so that all diseases would be dead in the sand, and then they would put it in their systems for 6 months until it is VERY LIVE. Or, some places will take shells and LR and crush it so fine that it appears to be sand. Because after all, thats all sand is...crushed shell and LR.

You probably want to use the cc to help speed up/eliminate the cycle, right? Here's what you do... get a mesh bag from the lfs. Fill the bag up with cc and place in your filter. This will help spread the bacteria quickly. If you have room for several bags in the filter, then use as much cc as you can. Make sure the water can circulate through it.

After a couple weeks you should be able to remove the cc. You don't want cc in your substrate because with an aggressive tank you will probably already have nitrates. CC will make it worse.

I did this with a wet/dry. Put it directly under where the water flows in... on top of the bio balls. Try to keep it above the water level with water continuously hitting it.
It's ok if you have more sand than cc. It only takes a small amount to spread the bacteria, especially if you have a lot of circulation going through it.
