They are Quahog clams. Names very depending on the mood of the person selling and the size of the clam.
Look for Little Necks, Chowders, Cherrystones...

Man, I wish I knew that before I went and bought mine. I bought a pound which only gave me 8 clams. They're huge!!! At any rate, I think I got the right ones. Woke up this morning and 4 had buried themselves. The others have not, but their valves are sticking out.

I bought 3 very large ones. 1 had a cracked shell and didn't survive my pitiful attempt at surgery. The other two large ones seem to be fine. I put them in my refugium and the bulk of the small ones in my display.

What a coincidence. We put the first one in, the largest, and the shell cracked. Why? He ended up being chow for the hermits and the RTBA.

I suspect the shell got too cold and warming it up cracked it.

I put three littleneck clams into my main display tank a few months ago and had to remove them a few days later. They kept excreting a clear gellatinous substance.
It got so bad that one clam had one of these clear jelly blobs about 4" in diameter. It was disgusting.

Follow up. Does any of you still have these clams in your tank. If so can I ask you for your tank temperature. I heard these guys do well in warm tanks still. Littlenecks are found in Baja California off Mexico which is pretty warm water. Just wondering thanks.

hard clams (little necks, cherry stones, quahog, chowders) are all the same species and range all up and down the eastern and western seaboard. they arent from just one place.

As long as no one has had a problem with these I am going to go after work and look for a store at carries live ones. I have a 40 gallon tank so I say 6 in the fuge should work fine.

Of the 8 I had, one died immediately (cracked shell) and I lost 3 since then. Out of curiosity, I dug up two that were visible to see if they were still alive and they were. Water temp is 78.

these clams need particulate food they are filter feeders, they do not directly consume nitrates they consume the organic particles that can cause nitrates, if there arent enough suspended particles for them they WILL starve.
Again I repeat they DO NOT EAT NITRATES.

I just really felt the need to point out they are filter feeders and catch particles not disssolved nitrates. photosynthetic clams can directly consume nitrogen in dissolved form as well as filter feed non photosynthetic clams cant, they only filter feed.

yeah those ones....

I have had two Cherrystone clams in my fuge for at least 6mths and they are doing fine. I have sold over a hundred of these over the last 6mths to reef keepers in my area and have not had any significant losses. Everyone seems to like them and I couldnt be happier with mine.
