What I usually find here and at other forums is those that complain about controversial threads are usually uninformed and attempt to participate in them.. Hence when people respond with facts and knowledge instead of generalizations it becomes heated and eventually deteriorates to name calling. The funny thing is, the childish behavior is usually done by adults, which I always found funny.

Personally, I think doing something like that is just the same as one of those pyros in California who started one of the fires that destroyed thousand's of homes. Salty lit the match, and sat back and watched it burn into a firestorm.
If the mods want to control the heated off-topics here, cut them off before they start. You're intelligent people, and know what topics will set off the various members here. I know this 'The Aquarium' board is meant for open topics not related to the saltwater hobby. However, if you want to start controversial threads, post a link to that kind of topic on MySpace, Facebook, or wherever there's a spot for blogs like that. Keep letting them start here will end up causing resentment and hatred towards members. Then when someone really needs help with their tanks, the person who has the knowledge to help that person will blow them off. "I'm not helping that person. He's Pro Choice and a baby killer. Let his tank die for all I care."
So by your own admission you believe that no one should be able to have a belief and argue their point. I don’t get it?
This is a message board where people come to talk about specific subject with a category for everything else in the word or what’s going on in ones own mind/world.
No one, not even a mod should have the right to stop, cease, dismiss or close a subject.
If your feelings get hurt by words, grow up and get a thicker skin. Trust me it will do you wonders in life.
If you feel the urge to dispute the subject by all means have at.
Even if you feel you need to lower your self or show your education by name calling, insulting or even physical retaliation, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO SO, and face the consequences of your actions. By limiting a persons freedom of speech by using the famous line “it violates board policy’s” is a cowards way of strong arming a persons right to free speech.
If salty wants to start a topic then fine, he has the right. Even to sit back and watch the fun ensue again he has the right.
To even metaphorically equate a topic of discussion to the deliberate act of a pyro in California is bogus attempt in it’s self to start a verbal riot.
This country was a lot stronger before every crying whining panty waste wanted to get their two cents written in stone.
Even the scary “N word”, people want to ban the word, you can not ban words. We live in free governing country. If someone should use the scary “N word” where they shouldn’t be using guess what they face the consequences of their actions.
People can use the word retarded, midget, and all the other words that put a tear on your pillow at night, cause they have the right to do so.
People have the right to say mean and hateful words, you don’t have to like it or agree with BUT YOU DON’T have the right to take that right away.
That last comment was not a window of opportunity to debate whether or not these words should or should not be used, it was an example.
“will start hatred and resentment toward other boards members“, that happens anyway. It happens all over, it happens in the work place. I’d be willing to bet someone hates or resents you.
Its ok to dislike someone or even hate someone YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO.

Like cow said its just a message board if you like to debate and argue have at it...if you dont like it then just read the posts and go on about your business...but when people start to get mad and angry about the other person's opinion i think thats where the line should be drawn and something should be done about it

Come on I am 100% correct that miami is going all the way.

Did someone see if marino was gonna make a comeback?

You are WRONG!!! How can you have that belief!!! This is the kind of stuff that needs to be weeded out!!!
Marino come back? He probably wants to now that Bret Favre has broken all of his records.... Speaking of the comebacks and the Miami Tuna's.. The Big Tuna has just signed on with the Dolphins, just in time for them to crush the Patriots...

this thread is controversial i agree. i think THIS thread should be banned. it's full of personal distaste and fighting over your thoughts. this thread shouldn't have been started in my opinion.
looks like someone just wanted to see people rise up and fight one another over a person you personally dislike.

Personally, I've never quite understood the sense in moderators (on any boards) getting all worried about stopping controversial threads. It's not like people arguing on the internet causes any actual physical damage to anything at all. It's just some words stored on a server.
And yet on virtually every board I've been on, moderators are all like "oh no: a fight has broken out on the INTERNET, we must DO SOMETHING!!!!"
I totally respect the right of board owners to set their own boundaries and rules: they are paying for the space and bandwidth after all! I just have never really seen the harm. Some people might read a thread and get turned off to the site in general, but that's such a minuscule amount, and probably more than compensated by drawing in people that like debate.

I disagree.
If people are personally attacked everytime they state a thought or an opinion then they will quickly stop expressing their thoughts.
I have no remorse at all deleting the posts of rude people. I actually enjoy it. In my experience, people resort to name calling and rude behavior when they run out of intelligent things to say.
Debates are great. It allows the transfer of knowledge and ideas. I'm against anything that gets in the way of a good debate.

I understand your points, however, when a thread is closed, the polite folks lose their privilege along with the rude.

Once a thread degrades to a certain level it becomes too time consuming for us Mods to monitor. That's typically when we lock em down.

Thanks for you post.
Yes, the few rude people do hurt the polite folks. That's why we often recommend banning habitually rude people.
The polite folk can always start up a new thread when one has been closed.

i'd disagree with this one...i've seen posts closed, then someone starts a new one, then it is closed because it's a continuation of the closed one.

They're usually only closed when the rude people start up the new thread. That has been my experience anyway. I've been wrong before though but that is the intention.
