Additionally, a higher water temp ALSO reduces available oxygen for the fish, as cooler water will absorb more O2 than warmer water, which will hold less dissolved O2....so warmer water makes it more difficult for them to breath......There are also some claims that adding copper/formalin will further reduce the amount of O2 the water will hold (though I have never researched this to prove/disprove --yet)
- so surley add an airstone if going above 82f temps cause there are several known reasons to add extra oxygen just to make it easier on them..
I believe this may very well be true. After my first try with hypo I was frustrated with not seeing any results which was mostly my fault for lack of research on my part when I first joined into the saltwater side of keeping aquariums. I was unprepared. I purchased my first saltwater tank off of craigslist. I didn't necessarily want the fish but the tank came with them. After transferring the tank there was a blue hippo that broke out with it. It got worse so I decided on hypo. Three weeks didn't see any results. At that point I decided to try a formalin type of solution. Basically a low percent mix of formaldehyde and water. Everything was going great. I saw improvement in the first week....I did the recommended water changes and added just less than the instructed dosage. Long story short...I was running air pumps on the tank. I turned them off one night and forgot to turn them on. Next morning, total surprise...my 2 tangs and coral beauty were dead. Goby, and clown fish still surviving.
At that point I did a 50% water change and turned the air back on immediately. The survivors were looking pretty bad but within a couple days seemed just fine again. I do not know for sure what caused this but my assumption was that the oxygen level in the tank fell too low and the tangs which require well oxygenated water were the first to go. I had read elsewhere, actually I think it we Beth (mod here) who mentioned the idea of the formaldehyde and low oxygen. That's the only other thing that I thought it could have been and I think that's exactly what happened.
I believe another member here may have had a similar experience in regards to vodka dosing.
