Dead fish this morning.....

I lost the new Solon fairy wrasse...I have egg crate up and mesh stretched accross it. There are no gaps....Now that I think about it, when I was feeding the fish yesterday it must have jumped and I didn't notice...the grate had kind of jarred but I thought it was just angled weird and fell a little, I never gave it a second thought. When I fed the fish this morning it was MIA...so I go looking and found his body behind the tank.
If you can't even feed them without them committing sushi...I won't bother with another one.

I lifted my mesh while feeding once and my diamond goby jumped and hit my arm and landed on the floor

The big question I now ask myself...should I replace it..or give up on fairy wrasses?

If I replace it...how do I feed the fish without the stupid thing killing itself?

Flower, Sorry for you loss. Is your piece of egg crate one solid piece for the top of your tank?? What I did with my 75g I took a piece of egg crate and cut it to the size of the tank, then I cut it so it in half so it would fit right down in tight. then I cut around where my over flows are. then on one of the sides I cut that in 3/4 and 1/4 so I only have to remove 1/4 of it to feed so the rest of the top of the tank is still covered!

I did the same thing. I have a center brace and I put each piece of egg crate over each section....I stretched mesh across everything as well...I haven't made a door like you mentioned and it's a good idea, but honetsly...What do I do when I need to service the tank, add a coral or fish???...I really think I will give up on jumpers. I mean if I can't even open the tank to feed them, let alone try and do anything else...I'm just so discouraged about adding another fish right now.
I was looking at some of those blue reef chromis...I could get a bunch of those...but then once again... all little fish...Honestly, if it were not for all the bristle worms and serpent stars I would put all these fish in the 56g and put my sea horses in the 90g reef. The clowns live in a corner of the tank, the Lemonpeel likes the rocks to swim through and the orchid dottyback likes the caves. The tank looks empty all the time except for the blenny popping his head up once in a while when he gets noticed, he looks like the rocks he sits on and is invisable 90% of the time.

Flower I know that is why I am not going to add another fish to my system as of yet. 1 because its a new system and I want it to be stable. 2 I am not sure what I want to add next.. I think for at least the next few months I will just add corals. Have you thought about a tang for the tank? Or remind me if you already have one. You could do a Yellow tang, Kole tang, or a Scopas tang. Even maybe consider a Powder Brown Tang. Just some suggestion I am throwing out there for you to maybe get a more active fish in your system.

My tank looks so empty...everything in there likes the rocks. I never really noticed because of the Hippo Tang who swam all the time, now that he is gone the tank just sits there with seldom seeing anything except a few dodges in and out of the rock.
I didn't mind closing up the tank with mesh...but now while I was feeding them the fish jumped and I didn't even notice. There is just no winning the battle, if a fish is determined to die.

P.S. You know I lost my lemonpeel in the 54G

Flower as I have stated in my post earlier have you considered getting another Tang??
I know where you could get a healthy hippo tang at a steal that is already buddies with a lemon peel.

LOL...No the 90g was really too small for him. I promised myself that if I lost him I would not replace him. I wish I could keep more than on angelfish in the tank....I really love those.

You triggered my memory from long ago. Like others here when I had a fresh water tank I used a window screen to cover the top. For fish that are likely to jump when feeding because this is how they capture live food in the wild. You can have a screen made with a Plastic Screen Wicket door. A wicket is an opening that allows easy access to casement or awning window operator. You install your own wire into the wicket to match the rest of the screen. This hinged wicket has a snap-type latch for secure closure. Can be installed along any section of the screen frame. So if you made a small opening with a hinge that can be latch good you should stop any jumpers. Add more then one if needed to do maintenance.
