I still have a small squar of course media filter in my tank to some what filter the tank. I change it every week so it doesnt become a nitrate factory. When i first got the tanke it came with 3 long strips of media filter, a large rectangualer sponge, bio-balls, ceramic rings, and carbon. I replace the bio-filters (bio-balls and ceramic rings) with live rock rubble. Took both the sponges and replaced it with little square of media filter. I put live rock under the filter to hold it up. And i only run the carbon for 4-6 days every month.
As for your mod, i think you might have to add a PH the modified water output thing you made out of PVC. The water wont come out of it if its below water level and if its not, the water wouldnt come out very hard. Maybe even not fast enough, and the filte will over flow.(like it was originaly built to do)

Thanks for the compliments! I would be glad to help you with any question you have. You are turning the 46 into a reef?

no the nano.
the 46 bowfrount tank was fish only, we had to down grade to a 12 gallon nano... and we want to make the nano into a reef...
do i need to add additional filters or heaters and if so how do i put them in the tank with out disturbing the origional make- up of it?
what we have is a jbj... i looked on the papers that came with it and it does say 24 watts but it dosnt explain if they are 24 watts combined or singally... and is the flow rate of 106gph going to be enough? please respond asap.

You dont need to add any additional filtration. If you want you can take out the rings/bio-balls and put small pieces of live rock in there instead. Make sure you clean the sponge regularly. Many people switch the pump with stronger pump to increase the flow rate.
