DIY Stand

There will be a seperate cabinet for those things. That will be next to the New tank.
All extras will be in the cabinet like salt, test kits cleaning supplies for the tank ballasts etc. This way I can lock the door away from the kids.

Can I use your pictures of your stand in another thread that I'm in to show what we are going to follow as long as I mention that they are your pictures.?
Like I was saying before that my husband and I are going to follow your plans (THANK YOU in advance for making them open to everyone) But, I have a few questions.
1- Could I build the front doors longer? Prob about the size of the side doors (maybe a little smaller) in Length. Would that change the integrity or strength of the stand?
2- How did you get the plywood on the inside of the floor on the stand? I can see you cut out spot for the 2 2x4's. But did you slide it down? Did you unsrew some screws to put in the plywood. I just can't figure it out. This is prob the reason why I"M NOT building the stand. I'm just the HELPER.

3- How many peices of plywood did you buy for around the stand? 2? what size?
Our stand will have to be about 51"Lx25"Wx36"H
Because of the 75g ( 48 1/2x18x21) sump/fuge. that fits inside the stand your showing and we are building. So there will be a few mod's but not to many. Again thank you for showing us your DIY. (Now if you could just show me the canopy......In detail also....could ya?..)

>>You're more than welcome to use my pictures in any way you choose, and I'm happy to know they will be helpful to you.

>>You can build the front doors at any length you so desire. I made them shorter because I had originally planned (and still am planning) on making it a bar as well.

>>I just cut out the notches for the 2x4's, slid the plywood in sideways, and layed it down. It's easy and fits fine (as long as you have the notches cut out correctly).
3- How many peices of plywood did you buy for around the stand? 2? what size?
>>I only needed one sheet. Plywood is 48x72... so since my stand is 48x24x36, it worked out perfectly.

>>You could get away with using just one sheet, but you need to be a little creative with the corner molding. I'll have to check my pc at home and see if I have any more pictures of my canopy.

In case you didn't notice Leona... I replied in detail to your previous question (question by question). Just want to make sure you didn't miss it:)

Funny You should say that scott9311(scott?) I closed out the response and then had to open it up again later to figure that out. I guess that would explain why on some other threads there are quotes but I don't see a response. I guess I have some back reading to do.

But to answer your question yes I did finally read your response. Our tank is looking to be done alot sooner then expected. So we need to start working on the stand asap.
So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's fairly simple though... I used 2x2 posts, and framed them with 1x2's, using only 1/4" plywood for the sides, top, and door (in the front and swings up). I used 1/4" to make it more light-weight for when/if I need to remove it, and also because I put in DIY moonlights which are blue LED's pushed through holes I drilled in the top. Hope that helps...

I know this is an old post. I am hoping that you can answer some questions for me because your stand looks GREAT and I am so inspired!!! We are planning on doing a stand for a 125g that is 72in long. I see that you did 3 2X4 for support. What would you reccommend for a 72 in? 4 across the back and 3 in front? We are using 2X4 as well. I also LOVE your side access pannel. Did you plywood the entire back? How do you get your cords to your outlets? My current 60g setup has an open back, just 1 support bean. Not sure if I really like that idea honestly. Any opinions on that?
Hope you don't mind all the questions. I happened to see this post when I searched, and I figured better to ask someone who really knows what they are doing than starting a whole new post.

The back is basically open except for about an 8" piece of plywood across for lateral support.
3 support beams across the front and back should be plenty. I'm building a stand for a 200g which is 84" long... and am using the same basic design. Here's a pic of the frame:

And with the panels cut out and stained (though not yet attached... and the doors not cut-out yet). The rock on top is rock I'm making for my set-up.

Awesome! I can't believe you just did your 120 and now you are upgrading. My husband would have a fit. It has taken me months of non-stop pleading to get this upgrade.
If I (or my husband) have anymore questions can I ask you? Your stands look great! Wonderful work.

Thanks so much. I will probably have him look at your framing pics tonight.
It helps that I'm single... I only have to ask myself (and my bank account)

Hey Scott
How was your canopy built? Did you use 1/2 or 3/4" plywood?
We finally completed our stand/cabinets and I'm going to start working on the canopy plans and I'm tossing which way to go.

I only used 1/4" plywood for the canopy because I wanted it to be light enough for me to take off and on with relative ease. I think 3/4" would just be a bit too heavy (it's already awkward enough because of the size). Glad to hear you're almost done!:D
