Sounds like he's got the led bug. It's contagious. Guess it's time for another build thread.
Shawn, the guy in the video was a good example of why fuses are a nice idea. Brain farts happen lol.

But there is no doubt, especially if you diy a fixture that I could create one just as strong or infact stronger than 400w halides. And if you really wanted to get crazy you could build a fixture that utilized 5w or 10w leds and mount the thing on top of your house and it would still probably be too strong for the tank dimmed down to 50% lol. That's probably an exaggeration ofcorse but you get the point.
I understand what your trying to get at here but.......It was my understanding that, using more of the lesser wattage LED's gave more lumen's/watt then going bigger on the LED? I thought the larger LED's were less efficient? That's why some of the LED manufactures are still using the 1 watt LED's instead of the 3 watt Cree's. I know there is a down fall when it comes to optics but...

3watt crees are the way to go imo! If its not the 3w crees i wont buy it....i use the blue 1w leds for moonlight lol
If u did use em u would need a lot to get the par and good coral growth!
I think the manufactures dont even know yet about led....they figure just post the better readings and whos gonna go out and buy a par meter to test it!
not two fixtures are the same either!

actually imo u want more LEDs with less optics! Giving u more par and better lighting over an area....u lose a lot of par from going just 2"-4" outside of the center

Not necissarily. At least not anymore. New stuff is coming out everyday. If you look at the new XM-L lamps for instance, which put out 100 lumens per what. You won't find a 1 watt led that puts out 100 lumens. They are 20% more efficient than the XP-G's which were an improvement over the XR series. So the technology keeps improving. But when comparing a lot of manufactured fixtures out there at this point then yes.. The ability of 1 watt leds to penetrate very deep in the water is an issue as you touched upon as well. So generally speaking, comparing a 3 watt fixture to halides or T5, I think the leds still come out ahead. More and more so every day.

I was told we are not supposed to link to that particular site. But out of respect I'll stay away from links to all other forums, and aquarium supply stores. If they want to delete that link that I don't know what the heck we are even doing here.

TOTM? What's that?
Yeah I ain't worried about it. It is what it is. Other places have that rule too, I just thought that was one of the cool things about this place in terms of linking information it didn't used to be a big deal. But in the words of the great ZEP..."hey hey what can I do?"

:( Please don't feel that way.....we could always pm or e-mail

Nah I aint mad about it. I don't agree with it but I'm over it. The place in question has the same rule, I tried to link my build thread over there once and it got taken down. I'm just sayin that if they took away all linking period that would be a little rediculous. Not even "that place" is that crazy.

Agree!!! How could 1w LEDs be more efficient??? You'd have to run more 1w to equal a 3w and the new generation LEDs are quite efficient.
