Enough already! No more ethnic titles!

If anything it should be ... AMERICAN of African decent
AMERICAN of Italian decent
AMERICAN of Irish decent .... etc.
If you are truely AMERICAN then AMERICAN should come first.
Just my 2 cents.

When I did genealogy in school, I said I was American. My point being I was born here, my parents were born here and some of my grandparents were born here. How far back do you have to go? If I remember right my teacher was not amused.

Unless you're Native American you have another enthinticity(sp)
In other words your family roots can be traced back to the "old country".

I think we're really blowing it out of proportion. Who goes around saying "Hello, I'm Greg Oden, and I'm African-American," anyways? It's merely a point back towards an individual's ancestry.
And this is coming from someone with Polish, Germany, Irish, English, Yugoslavian, background (that's what happens when your family has been here since before the Civil War lol).

So let us say that someone gets robbed and the police asks the victim to describe the attacker.. They should say, "Well, the attacker was an American." And instead of going out to get Mexican food, or Chinese food, or Italian food I would call them all American food, since this is American right, made in American by Americans with American influence.
Is it really THAT bad to see people acknowledge their heritage if they choose?

no, it's that bad to see people throw their ethnicity in our faces and blame their problems on it as well

i could not have said it better myself. however as messed up as it sounds we still need the titles. sorry. since iam mexican i will use myself as an example. if i were to rob a store then u know wut that would say a hispanic male. not and american male if that makes sense. or if your looking for someone at ur LFS and ur like is "john here" and they are like "John who" u have to think about saying "the black one i guess." not the darker american fellow. and we need it for our young ones to look up to to say hay he/shes blah blah blah like me if he/she can do it so can i. u cant just ignore race. some of that might sound ridiculous or cliche but how and why in such a culturally rich country as ours can u ignore ur or others heritage/race. i have aruments like this with my best friend who is white haha on a regular basis. and about mexicans speaking spanish but thats another topic all together

IMHO, these Ethnic-American labels only nurture stereotyping and the alienation of said ethnicities.
Oh well, I suppose I will start calling myself an Orange County-Californian-German-Swiss-American.
