It's not that they would do better at the LFS, it's that you wouldn't be supporting the profit and sale of these critters and sending them a message at the same time. We stop buying and they'll stop selling. They made a profit from you... so they'll bring in another doomed specimen for the next guy they can make a profit from.
I understand what you are saying, unfortunately none of our LFS in our area will give you any credit/money back on a return. So the LFS would turn around and sell it again and make a double profit on the same doomed animal. I would rather give it to someone who maybe able to give the feather star a chance at survival and then have a conversation with the LFS about the bad advice. Either way it is a bad situation.

Oh, I get ya. I've been there Dood..... I've brought home my fair share of ill-fated critters over the years. I just wanted you to know the suggestion to bring it back wasn't because they could do a better job, because they definitely can't in most cases.
Go back and tell them. It might not make a difference, but sometimes they do listen. I'm not against bringing these critters in as a special request, if someone is willing to try their hand at it. They shouldn't be sold as stock.
Sometimes the stores don't even ask for these and they are "added" to the order. There's always added items when the LFSs get shipments.

Not really anything to show as of right now. Took her a while to find somewhere to call home last night. Tried to record dark video no luck, wish i had night vision mode.
Anyways, she seems to be sleeping now. Amazing seeing how it anchors to the rock. As you can see in the photo one limb is extended stuck to the rock( theres another on the other side same way) with it underside also anchored by its legs. Then it curls up tight.
Clowns are bullys and making me regret getting them. They werent hitting it last night but they would get close to it then fan water with their tales at it or at least the female would the male didn't seem interested in it.
More pics and hopefully video to come as soon as there is anything to report. Im told they usually take about 72 hours till they are comfortable in their new homes to start "flying" through the water. Clock is ticking....fingers are crossed.

xcali1985---It looks good! I haven't seen ours "fly" at all. He climbs all over the tank though. Seems like it stays in one place for a couple of days, then moves. It is amazing how it looks small when it is curled up and then opens up to the size of a dinner plate! I love watching it crawl around the tank--I still drop whatever I'm doing just to watch it.
Handbanana---whenever I see your name it reminds me of our yellow tang--the hubbie calls her Hanna Banana--her name is Bella. He make up weird names (sorry) So far Hairy Booger is doing fine. It looks the same as the day we brought it home. The beautiful red feather star we saw at the LFS was loosing its "feathers" all around the tank. I've been watching for that, I assume that is a BAD sign. I haven't been able to reach the person I was hoping would take it. For now I feed about 3 times a day--during the time it is open. It usually opens about 8:00-8:30pm, even if the light is on and stays open till the lights come on mid-morning.

If it opens up soon ill record as much video as my 8GB camera will hold. It moves pretty well considering and when they fly might be the best thing in the tank. Have you seen youtube videos?

I havn't seen the youtube videos yet, My content filter at work blocks them. But ill check that out tonight. should I look for flying feather stars? or just feather stars?
Do these critters need a lot of swimming space? For some reason I cant see your pic Xcali, I DID see it, don't know where it went tho. It looked like it finds a spot, then closes up? any ideas why it does this? And why it looks like a plant?

A couple of people in our local reef club had one also, they said it was rare that they would "fly" (swim), they ususally crawled or walked around the tank. Both people in the club that I talked to said they were only able to keep theirs alive about 4-6 weeks. They also said theirs were loosing the "feathers" when they bought them. Ours is fully intact so far, but I realize it is highly unlikely it will survive any length of time.:sad I would really rather find it a more appropriate home. The only way I can describe the walking movement is that it moves just like a spider. It moves its feather like legs really high, one or two at a time. Sometimes it moves slow and sometimes it is pretty quick! It moved the length of our tank (6') in about 2 minutes. Usually it just moves short distances, it seems to like the top of the tank. I'm betting it is because the current is stronger towards the top of our tank. It also only seems to walk when it first opens up for the evening. I am not exactly computer literate, but I will try to catch a video of it sometime soon and post it. It did its moving for tonight and I work the evening shift this weekend---hopefully he will feel active tomorrow.
Hand Banana---I didn't really think it meant anything dirty, just interesting. It just reminds me of my hubbies silly names--that is a good thing, cause I kinda like him
Must be an interesting dog.
