Fish Are Not For Cycling!!!!

I truly thought this thread was dead, I went off on a tangent one day and decided to make a thread about it, i suppose I didnt think about the bad advice that would be given. and people arguing that the fish are ok, I wish I was a fish whisperer!!!

and yes cost is not the issue of this thread, its a poor practice, and is not neccessary. there are many things out there to kick start a cycle, ie raw shrimp, uncured LR...

Yes, you can cycle with live sand. It would be better to add live rock as well at this point, but if it's not in your plan that's ok. You can either put the dead shrimp in the tank, or put in a small amount of fish food each day.
It is impossible to predict how long a cycle will take. It depends on the bacteria you are starting out with, how much photosyntisis is going on in the tank, and how much ammonia supply there is. You need to have ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test kits. Ammonia and nitrite will spike during the cycle. When you have seen ammonia and nitrite spike and return to 0, and nitrate goes up, then you can do a big water change and add your first fish.
Don't count on a certian period of time, and don't trust your local fish store to test the water for you. (Water that hasn't started to cycle yet will test safe for fish, but without sufficient bacteria the first fish that goes in will make the water toxic rather quickly.) Buy the test kits, test daily, and watch the cycle. Once your cycle is over, you will only need to test occasionally, and the reagents eventually go bad if not used up, so don't be afraid to go hog-wild with the testing at the beginning.

i used frozen prawns to get my ammonia up. And its better (and more humaine) than using fish.

I had to put my two cents worth because my husband and I just had a BIG discussion about something like this the other day, only we were talking about chickens. I'm a wildlife biologist (not marine) and a big animal lover, but once we get on a soapbox, it's very hard to stay there. Lines become blurred as to what is acceptable and what isn't. Someone will always debate you and argue with you, no matter what your opinion is. I am totally against anything that is intentionally cruel to animals. I cry watching those animal cop shows on Animal Planet. I am NOT, however, a vegetarian, so am I a hypocrite? Most of my tank inhabitants are wild-caught animals.
I'll tell you a secret--I just added live rock to my tank and a package of that bio stuff in the cooler at the LFS, and I never even had an ammonia spike. I waited a few weeks then started with a damsel--not to cycle the tank, but because they were listed as an excellent beginner fish that would eat and survive very well. I still have him.
I won't go into the "discussion" I had with my husband, but it ended with him saying to me, "You could never shoot a cow, but you just LOVE a big juicy steak." Amen.

Do any of you guys/girls eat fish? They are netted by the thousands every year and dragged up onto a boat to suffocate. I mean, in a sense we are all being cruel in some way or another as I'm sure a fish wouldn't want to be taken from the ocean and put into a box. My damsel is a perfect angel, have had him for a year, and people have offered to buy him because he is big and beautiful. A human can be sick for a couple of weeks and get better right? I agree with angelsrock. This thread could go on forever.

i sure as hell eat fish, they taste great. i remember when i was young i went on a vacation with my family to jersey or maryland, i can't remember which, anyways we went crabbing and caught a lot of blue crab. my sister and my father were having fun all day and then we brought them home and we put them on ice as we started boiling a pot. well my sister was playing with the crabs and then my dad started picking them up and dropping them into the pot. the look of shock on my sisters face was priceless and then she just started balling her eyes out. i hate to admit it but it was one of the funniest things i've ever seen. my sister is 2 years older than i am by the way.

I'm glad I'm not the cocktail shrimp with it's final humiliation to an already miserable life being substituted for fish poop.

I keep live organisms in my living room for my own enjoyment and no other reason...I therefore refuse to question anybody's morality.

I don't understand what is wrong with using lr? Yes, maybe it is expensive, but you are almost definitally going to buy some in the long run. And if you are one of the rare hobbiests that doesn't buy lr, what's wrong with a cocktail shrimp? When you choose to cycle with a damsel you might be thinking, "A fish! Yay! Interesting thing to watch!" But you are giving him his death sentence...or a miserable life! I say just be patient, cycle with lr of a cocktail shrimp, not a damsel! (or any other fish for that matter)
