okay... just read several different sites on salinity and i now see there are different ways to measure. I guess most common ids the refracto meater correct? So is there a formula to figure out the diiference? According to my refracometer, my salinity is 1.026.

1.035? Wow..... why so high????
Lol, 2Quills and florida joe are right, 35 ppt, not 1.035 specific gravity. 35ppt is about the same as 1.026sg. My refractometer gives me both salinity (ppt) and specific gravity, so I've been switching sporadically back and for between the two. Sorry for your confusion.

I've been switching because everyone gives a specific gravity for hypo (1.008sg), and not a salinity, so as the salinity has dropped I've switched to specific gravity. Normally I give my salinity in ppt, as I did at the start of this thread. So I hope this clears this up for you.

Nice typo. See what you've started?

And if you've ever had your meater refracted you know how painful that can be!!

I feel for you...

Okay, the specific gravity is now 1.008. So she's officially in hypo now.
No signs of ich tonight. So that is good. I'll keep you updated.

Now is the time you need to be right on point with your salinity, most of the ick parasites are off your fish and moving to the vulnerable stage
What is the limit as to how high the salinity can get for hypo to be effective? Also, I have to wait until there is no ich on the fish to start the 3 week clock, right? This morning there were still two or three spots on her.
I'll watch the water levels carefully, and top off everyday.
I also plan on doing a 50% water change tomorrow, so I'll mix some 1.008 sg water tonight.
Fish looked good this morning, is still eating very aggressively. Her behavior hasn't changed at all with the hypo, so I consider that a good thing.
Thanks for all the help!

Patients my friend is what is needed now. IMO you have no room to wander higher than the prescribed salinity for hypo. As far as the three weeks’ time frame. The time line I subscribe to as far as the ick parasites is as fallows. 3 to 7 days attached to fish. 18hrs after falling off fish to attach to substrate. 3 to 28 days to divided and reproduce. (The time hypo IMO is most effective. ) Now if we add that up we get 5 plus weeks. I would add another for good measure and you have six. Yes sorry to say but IMO that is the time you need to keep you fish in Hypo to be sure you brake the life cycle.
Remember during hypo evaporation is your worst enemy so keep a keen eye on your salinity

I'm in no rush. Six weeks is fine by me.
Salinity balanced out to 1.009sg, this is the right level, yes? I'll check water levels everyday, and stay ahead of topping off. I put a small scratch on the intake tube of my filter so I can easily see changes in water level.
pH is 8.2, so I'm good there. She seemed shy tonight, I think she lost what trust she had gained in me when I was doing all the water changes. But I'll earn it back. I fed her garlic mysis tonight, so that should help too.
Have saltwater mixing for a water change, hopefully tomorrow. What is the best way to do a large water change (50%) in such a small tank without disturbing her too much?

Just use a small diameter hose to syphon out the water and replace at water change. I like to also treat the tank with prime when preforming hypo
constant SG of 1.009/salinity 14 ppt
