so i changed my return line from a spray bar, to two loc line returns. they'll sit under the sand and you'll only be able to see the return part of the loc line. tell me what you think

alright had to take some sand out. was to much. so i have the sand i took out in a 32g rubbermaid. as soon as it dries out, the other 60lbs i have will join it. close it, and in the shed it goes till i upgrade the tank. look at the second pick above this post and look at the pic in this post and you'll def see the difference.

Lookin' good Grubs. So your not using a skimmer? I want to start a frag tank of my own soon. I wasn't sure if a skimmer was necessary or not.

no skimmer on this tank, the next frag tank will have either and octo or an ASM.

i do have some frags sitting in my 125DT. but im going to test the frag tank today and see. i had water saved from when i broke it down, so any cycle should be gone by now. as soon as tests come in then stocking follows.

i do have a confession though i had two blue devil damsels, they went through hell and back many times. today i woke up and they were both dead. so i think i stressed them to much, but we'll let the test talk first.

tests are done. i dont see anything out of wack that would off them.
SALINITY=1.021
NITRATE=0
NITRITE=0
pH=8.2
AMMONIA=0
CALCIUM=420(COULD BE HIGHER FOR FRAG TANK)
PHOS=0
DKH=4.8 (UP FROM 3.5)(COULD AND SHOULD BE HIGHER)
so i think that stress with moving them and then scooping out all that sand and among other things just stressed them out to death.

well since the two damsels went so did 3 snails. they were all fine for that first day. it was after i scooped out the that sand that it started to go down hill. at first i thought maybe my tank was going through a mini cycle, but test were negative. and the damsel were fine all night, it was the next morning that they died. then i started to think was it the black paint i used to paint the eggcrate. but that couldnt be it. it was dried for 5-6 weeks before it went into the tank, if your going to ask i used krylon fusion black pray paint. i also used this paint in my 125DT without problems. so i really dont know. the only thing that is still alive in the frag tank is a blue legged hermit. which is making a good feast of the snails.
i can tell ya, im really bumbed by this.

Wow that sucks. I still dont think I would use the paint inside the tank - previous luck or not. Just doesnt seem safe to me. I'm digging that deep sand bed though. You gotta put some jawfish in the frag tank!

i really dont think it was the spraypaint, but it could be. i will try another damsel in there friday, and see. if that to dies then im just gonna pull the frag rack out and put new unpainted one in. by this friday the tank would have been running for over a week so we'll see. not to say your wrong delta, but i still think i stressed them out. cause if it was the paint they would have died the first nite not the second. after two days going from a rubbermaid tote, to a tank cloudy as hell, then me scooping out a lot of sand, then later that night i played around with the egg crate, just think i stressed everything out.

Could be, just hope you figure it out. I'm just one to not take chances with my tanks (I consider ******** paint to be high risk).

come to think of it i also painted the back of the overflow baffles too. so i really dont want to rip the tank down and redo everything. that will take a while. also i would have to buy black plexi glass and do it that way.
i really really really hope it was just stress.

ill tell ya delta if i have to break this tank down to redo it. i will be very upset. i actually hate the white egg crate. and again i would have to pull out the baffles and start over from scratch. also i dont think the misses will like that very much.

I know what you mean, the white egg crate isnt attractive at all, but I'm sure there are some alternatives. Maybe you could do a frag rack out of tonga branch rock. That would be pretty interesting... I'm trying to think of a different kind of frag rack that blends better myself. There has to be some kind of commercial alternative to eggcrate.

i just figured it out. i have a strong idea what is going on. it all came to me when i was near the sink. i remember askin my girl for a wash cloth. i needed one to wipe off some sand that got on the tank. well from sittin there all day and night and day. it dried with the saltwater so i needed to get it wet and wipe it off.
my girl said theres no clean ones, she has to do laundrey. ok fine, get me the next best thing. she brings me a brand new sponge. right away i ask her to go read the package. to see if it was a anti bacterial sponge. she said no. it was from the dollar store so i dipped it in the tank a couple times to get it moist and rubbed off the sand.
well tonight while i was doing the dinner dishes i was starring at the sponge and was like let me see this damn package. so i started to read. rite on the cover of the package it say resists bacterial odor. well i thought doesnt say anti bacterial.
i flip the package over and start reading. its says quote for quote "This product does not disinfect or kill bacteria,viruses, or germs on surfaces". then i got to the thinkin how can it fight bacteria odors without fighting bacteria. looking some more and it has Antimicrobial Technology applied to it.
then after all that in (mods sorry for this but have too) big A$$ letters it say
NOT FOR AQUARIUM USE
so with all this said, the sponge is not made strong enough to be considered anti-bacterial, it does fit bacteria. great
now that i know whats wrong im going to just empty the tank and refill it with the water change from my 125DT. shouldnt be a problem now that i kinda figured it out.

Ahhh, a big round of applause for the girlfriend. Told ya you'd figure it out. I would surely change all the water and maybe even rinse the sand or at least stir it up. Shouldn't be too big of a hiccup though.
