Thanks for the update on your daughter, keep our fingers crossed.
Green water is caused by too much nutrients in the water and too much light, some of the planted tank people actually want this. Don't know why?
In my 35 gallon I have
3:angels
3 blue rams
4 lemon tertras
1 other kind of tetra - ?????
5 neon tetras
Pleco
three cories - 2 sabines, 1 teddy bear
amano shrimp 4 - great for algae
1 clown - kulie
2 ottos
4 new nerite snails - also great for algae
These fish are fine with the live plants - nothing gets uprooted and they all get along. You might think that is a lot of fish - but there are alot of plants as well.
Everything seems to be in balance for now, and I don't pan on adding much more - untill I get them into the 65 gallon. There are some real good sites foe planted tanks out there I can PM you one I use.
Thanks Al

If I decide to use the 30g for fresh I will take you up on that. The web sure has changed things to the good for us fish people. I have learned so much on this site that I just can't find in books, and I'm sure the same is true of FW as well.

You are going to have a spare fluval canister one of these days.

I am indeed. You read my mind, we are getting to be close friends..LOL I keep asking my boss and he keeps saying yes, then he says he isn't sure, then he hasn't looked in the basement for it. Doesn't know if he wants to swap something or sell it outright... Deep down he doesn't want to let it go. His wife is mean to him, poor thing, and won't let him set it up in the living room. His man cave is finished now but it only has room for a 30g tall.

I think its the light thats on too long as well as my daughter doesnt feed the tank properly. I dont know how many times she has come down the stairs with that "oops" look on her face just to find out that she dumped the food into the tank. We have done plenty of water changes.

Hello Regulars!
I wanted to let members know that I too enjoy freshwater as does SWFishy. I am going to see if we can't add a freshwater forum because the topic is IMO relevant to Saltwaterfish keeping.
I actually have a question. I have a heavily planted 90 Gallon, I made the 2 liter type Co2 addition and I use Leaf Zone. The plants are thriving but my fancy guppies are dying. They have fin rot, and or some other bacterial infections that I am afraid to treat (because of the $$$ in plants) Any suggestions?

This is why a freshwater tank is best for young people. They are more forgiving when an oops happens. My kids have even put wieners in the tank with mustard.
When I first got into saltwater a fellow tried to tell me that if I cleaned the outside of the glass with Windex I needed a whole new tank to keep SW fish. I laughed at him and told him if what is on the outside could kill a fish, my critters were doomed because the kids smeared spaghetti sauce all over it once.

I type out a whole aswer and it just disappears

I hope this one posts right...I had a fin rot issue once...it has been a very log time ago but I used those instant ocean discs that sit in a mesh ring and fizzes. I didn't have near the plant life you do, but it didn't hurt what I had.....My tank never looked as nice as yours does.

oooo! Kids...I was a nanny before SWF.com and had a 90reef. The kids liked to help me clean and somehow when I wasn't looking one of them put a dryer sheet in my sump....needless to say I lost 98% of everything I had. More loss than any hurricane. Never know what will happen with kids lol!

My kids have been well educated, scared is more like it, to stay away from daddy's tank. When I offer for them to do anything with the tank that does not involve feeding, most of them, wife included, turn me down. Just about anyone will feed the tank. Only I have cleaned everything in the tank. My daughter likes to help brew the water and take the SG measurements. But they all like to pick out what goes into the tank.

My fish tank is in the living room where I can guard it from the grandkids. I don’t even let them look at the tank up close, only for a moment then I have them sit down to watch the fish from the sofa. They may not feed my fish, they may not help with the tank, they may not even touch the glass or the stand.
Little Andrew (4 yrs old) has scared me from kids and tanks forever.

LOL, i guess it doesnt help that i threaten to feed the kids to the fish right? LOL
I supervise them when feeding the flakes. It takes no skill to dump in the mysis either. I have relaxed on touching the glass and I live with the fingerprints for about 12 hours before i clean them off. The one thing my daughter likes to do is use the magnet cleaner on the glass. I have taken great care to ensure that the rockwork is far enough in the tank that she cant hit any with the magnets.

Kids are sooo into the magnets! I don't have kids but friends kids have been "scolded" (all but beaten) when swooshing the magnet from one end of the tank to the other! Seems like they all find the magnet...lol!

First let me say that is a beautiful tank. I add salt to my guppy tank, I use the API stuff, it acts like a tonic, doesn't harm the plants. I add it to all my FW tanks. That might help them out. Otherwise i think you would have to take them out and treat them with a Fungus Cure, I am just using some with my goldfish tank today, it seems to be helping out, I only have one live plant in there, Java Fern, it seems to be doing fine, On the package the active ingredients are Victoria green and Acriflavine. Good luck, i read somewhere that you can use yours saltwater mixing salts as well.

I love the interaction with kids and the fish tanks, my son is 9 he is pretty good about everything to do with animals, he loves them very much, we have everything, 8 fish tanks, two dogs, flemish giant, three chickens, a horse (of course), bearded dragon. I think it teaches them alot of respect for life. Thanks for sharing your stories and ladyreef That is one beautiful planted tank.

LOL...I'm talking GRANDkids. I have no power to control them. My own kids had all kinds of pets, even little betta tanks. Grandkids and visitors have to keep hands off, they don't know anything about the tank and put stuff in they shouldn't. Andrew played in the test chemicals, very dangerous. So I don't let them near the fish tank or the bad things that are not baby proofed all around it. On a day to day life... I have only adults in the house.
Al, I'm sure you son does not go to other peoples or grandpa's house and start doing stuff with their animals or fish tanks. In your own home, the children are in a different category.

I can relate to this. My nephew who was 4 decided my fish in my small tank needed a bubble bath, so he put in some of his bubble bath in my tank. This happened so quickly, but luckily it was not my big tank. The tank just had 4 damsels in it, which I had to move to my 55 (I could not let them die). It took me a couple of months to straighten everything out. Now everyone knows not to touch the tank.

I have one Nephew that I would trust to help me with my tank but he also 15, but anyone else there is no way they will even remotely be able to do anything with my tank.. LOL It is going to be hard to get someone I trust trained to take care of my tank when I go on vacation. LOL TANK IS GOING TO BE HANDS OFF TO EVERYONE!!
