freshwater mollys in saltwater :)

Most freshwater people that have molly's or green spotted puffers don't realize that they are very brackish water species. They actually live longer in saltwater then freshwater. The 2 species of mono's can aslo live in saltwater. I've kept mono's molly's, and GS puffer in the same saltwater tank and they lived along time.

Actually converting them to saltwater generally makes thir lifespan longer, not shorter. And yes they do tend to be healthier.

Fantastic thread! I have two black lyrtail mollies that I will convert now. They are beautiful fish. As soon as my tanks ready. You just dripped acclimatized them? How long was the process? How much salt water per minute/hour did you add?

thanks! and u know im not sure exaclty how much i would put it at a time. i just scoop a little bit of water and add it in the bag with them and leave them for a little bit and id keep doing that tilll the bag got pretty full then i would take cups of water out slowly and add more from the tank till it was all saltwater. i hope this helps!

Hah no wonder why my spotted puffers never lasted long in freshwater! Wish I would have known that seven years ago makes me want to go out and see if I can acclimate one to my qt tank first

My favorite lfs (shut down a long time ago) had a sw molly tank. Those mollys were bigger, looked cooler, and had a lot more fry. Not sure if they lived longer or not though. I don't personally like the look of mollys in saltwater especially reef setups. But that's just me. Have fun.

Because of the controversy of the mollie versus freshwater - saltwater; I did a search and found that they will *tolerate* freshwater but are more prone to disease in freshwater.

They are brackish fish. They shouldn't be put in fresh or salt water to tell you the truth...

the transition should be over several weeks. not all at once. i took 2 months to convert my puffers, although i was waiting for them to grow as i converted them
