Fromia Sea Star

I got a Red Sea Star last week and I noticed today that something is eating it right in the center of it. Should I take it out and destroy it or should I just leave it? I read about it after my husband bought and saw that it doesn't have a good survival rate. Any suggestions?

WOW...it really was. I know a lot of stars starve, but...i don't think they do that quickly
how is your tank testing?

This is a very delicate star.
What are your water parameters? How did you acclimate it? This is acclimation shock, not starvation.

My parameters are all good. I did the float method for 40 minutes. I have noticed my hippo tang taking off with some pretty big crabs so I thought maybe it had been picking on the starfish. I was within a few hours that all this happened. It looked like something had been ripping its insides out. All I know is no more starfish for me. I hate to be the cause of something dying.

What is "good" for fish is frequently fatal for stars like this.
The acclimation is not sufficient. A 3 hour drip acclimation is required. It is possible it was dying at your LFS. NEVER impulse purchase a seastar. It takes a lot of looking around and asking questions of your LFS, specifically as to their specific gravity.

Thank you for the information. I don't inpulse buy. We have an online store right down the road so I look at their stock and then read up on it. My husband, however, does like to impulse buy. We have had a few arguements on this subject. I am sorry the poor star fish suffered the bad decision. I don't think I will ever get another one but if I do I will remember to acclimate it as you stated. Thanks for the info.
