I am beginning to think that ranking the recruiting classes is one of the stupidest things done in college sports. How many years did Charlie Weiss have one of the top 10 classes and...exactly what did he do with those classes???
If you want to see a real recruiter that makes the most of what they have....go to a little town called Alliance, Ohio and visit Coach Larry Kehres at D-III Mount Union College (soon to be the University of Mount Union...but will always be MUC to me). This guy picks up the scraps that aren't "good enough", aren't "big enough", aren't "fast enough", etc... to play D-I and turns them into champions year after year. You can watch one of them play in some game called the Super Bowl on Sunday...and no, he isn't the long snapper or the 4th string DE...he is one of the starting WR's for Peyton Manning and the Colts...Pierre Garcon.
You can recruit whatever you want...but if you can't coach them up and keep them eligible (see Lane Kiffin), they mean nothing. USC has been in the top 10 for how many years and have how many National Championships to show for it in the past 10-12 years?
Brownie!!! Seriously??? You use USC as an example?!?
Lets look at USC in the 8 years since Carroll took over shall we, forget before Carroll, they were below average before him...
7 straight years finishing the season in the top 5....This to me is the most impressive thing.
2 National Championships, lost a 3rd on the last play of the game, should have played in the title game last year (Sanchez year), but got screwed because everybody thought the Big 12 South was so good.
7 straight BCS games, 6 wins, 6 blowouts, one loss on the last play of the game
7 Pac 10 Titles
3 Heismann Trophy winners
1 loss out of conference in 8 years (that would be the loss to Texas on the last play of the game), and USC doesn't play cupcakes out of conference.
My favorite one...Gave THE Ohio St the worst beating they could have ever imagined under Tressel.
What exactly does a team have to do to be considered successful in your eyes?
They had a below average year last year, what do expect? They lost 12 starters to the NFL (including QB), and lost their O and D Coordinators to Washington, any other team would be thrilled with 9-4 after that.

I guess what I was trying to say was that a great recruiting class doesn't necessarily mean that the recruits will create a National Championship every year. Don't forget to mention that USC did all of that COMPLETELY on the up and up...they never got any of those recruits the wrong way...NO NO NO...everything was on 100% legal and according to the books.....nope, nobody was EVER given preferential treatment at USC, no way...that COULDN'T happen!
SO...take away one of the Heisman Trophy's, take away at least one of the National Championships (as well as the one lost on the last play of the game...which is still a LOSS)
For the record, USC beat Ohio State once (without their starting All American running back...if you can make excuses, so can I) and Jim Tressel beat Ohio State once with his conservative play-calling this year...that game shouldn't even have been close.

Holy crap I can't believe I missed this thread! I am really excited about this incoming class and if we can get our OL to actually play I look foward to this next season could we might actually put up a real fight for the east.
On another note if Spurrier atleast doesn't win us the bowl I think he needs to be let go. As much as I love my home team the old saying of: "South Carolina is where great coaches go to die." Is very true. If we don't do some moving up next year SC should look into a young coach wanting to prove something.

Good grief, a Gamecock fan that seems to know whats going on and realizes with the talent they have the team should be better.

Every year I watch my Gamecocks play and every year I see the same thing. Great talent and every game seeing 80% of the team playing like it doesn't matter. Last year I saw two games where I felt they were playing like they should. The loss against Georgia the last second of the game and the win against then #4 Ole Miss. I love my Gamecocks but I'm realistic.

not really, the Trojans were the better (paid) team on both of those Saturdays.
Maybe you just need to hire another angry little man to slap your players into shape on the sidelines.

Have you been alive long enough to have seen Ohio State beat USC?

NO...the angry little man doesn't slap OUR players, he goes after the opposition's players! If you are going to talk trash about the great Woody Hayes, at least get it right.
And...no, I wasn't alive the last time that OSU beat USC, though they have only played 4 times in my lifetime.
For the record, my last comment was in more or less jest (the better paid team).

Woody was fun to watch. There is a video clip I need to find. It's in the history of USC football collection. USC had a running back named Sam Cunningham, "Sam the Bam" who was pretty much unstoppable inside 5 yards. He was able to get airborne really good for a big guy. SC is on the goal line and USC coach John McKay gets Woody's attention and makes a swoop motion with his hand signaling what is about to happen. Woody slams down all his equipment and just waits for the inevitable. Those guys loved to go up against each other.
