Holy cyano batman!
Are you sure you want to be buying corals when your tanks water is unclean and unstable? Not really second guessing you but just wondering your thoughts.

I prefer regular frequent 50% water changes whenever possible. and for some reason my corals always grow insanely fast. maybe its only anecdotal evidence but I feel the looks of my tanks and the growth of my corals are worth the salt. it saves me a lot of $ in dosing and other maintainence.
if you think 50% waterchanges are over kill wait until you hear about my feeding rituals on a full out established reef tank. generally I feed 5-7 times a day. various foods in small amounts. I dont know how people go feeding only every couple days. but these are habits I have gained after a long time reefing, researching, and observing.
food and parameters on a reef are stable and plentiful in our tanks we seem to try and make them sterile. I want my corals to be feeding all day as well as my fishes just like in the ocean. I also want the chemical balance to remain as near the original parameters as possible. since I cant dose "everything" except with salt, my water changes are my dosing, they are also my most efficient means of nutrient export. as well as a way to remove the chemicals of coral warfare and shed nematocyst from other corals and anemone.
In my experience there is nothing to compare to keeping your parameters as stable as possible, with a 50% waterchange on a regular basis, the tank virtually gets a reset at every water change keeping everything maxed. I'm not talking a 50% every 3-5 months that would actually be a huge upset to a system. I am talking monthly changes where the major parameters dont have time to shift far away from the original.
For one fish and some coral you feed that amount???? Marked in red is why you have that morning bloom, and why you have hair algae and the unbelivable amount of cyanobacteria...I also have accidently dumped my cup of skim in my tank and it did not harm at all. You are over feeding, I have heard of some people doing that kind of feeding for non-photosynthetic corals but they also do DAILY water changes.

Flower he said that was his feeding schedule on a "full out established reef tank"
I know he isn't a beginner...post 113 shows a new tank and the only thing is that new tank are coral frags and he says 1 fish. Even 50% water change once a month isn't enough to clear up the kind of food he is feeding the tank with one fish and a bunch of frags.
He said he has a weird cloudiness every morning. The tank is covered in cyano and he just got the hair algae starting to recede.
I understand his reasoning...but it's my opinion that he is overfeeding. ...

Oh I see now what your saying Spanko...I had to reread his post a few times before I realized he isn't talking about this tank with 1 fish and frags....
Sorry Reef....I misunderstood....However, I still think overfeeding is why you have problems in that 125g. GHA, and cyano are classic signs of overfeeding.

all good flower. the cyano is from using old sand from my crashed tank. its probably saturated with phosphates so I kind of did myself a disfavor by using the old sand, but I'll get through it I have beaten cyano many times before.

the cloudy nmess is gone as well as almost all the hair algae now I just need to beat back the cyano. what I really need is either some caulerpa or a large amount of cheato to start off in my sump.

so I took and ran a siphon through a net and sucked out the majority of the cyan today running the water back into the sump. I am making a run to a not so LFS today to see if they have any macro's. hoping to find caulerpa and cheato, as well as a phosphate sponge. I know I also need more nassarius snails to maintain the top of my sand bed so I dont have to keep stirring it by hand.

the fighting conch I ,may have to order online in the future since they are super rare around here... no one carries them.
its too bad that sand sifting stars are so detrimental to infauna of the sand bed. I am also hoping i I can find aother black sand sifting cucumber, for this tank, since they are detritivore only sifters.

Yup, cucumber another good option for a tank your size. An unrelated question is are you getting any sand clumping at all? Wouldn't think you would be getting any calcite precip on the used sand, just a question.

nah no clumping.
ok so I picked up some feather caulerpa, ( I put some in the dt and some in the sump) and a frag of AOG zoas I will take pictures once the zoas open they are poorly colored due to insufficient lighting on the frag tank they were in but I saw them a couple months ago when they were nicely colored, so I am sure they will rebound. I also snagged a red discosoma, dont ask me why usually I try like hell to keep discasoma out of my dt's but I figured why not this time.... watch I'll probably end up regretting it .lolz

I ordered one new bulb this week and if my work week goes well I will order the other one next week. I have decided to go with 14k hamilton 250w bulbs, since I am running hamilton mechanical ballasts I wanted to be sure the bulb could handle it and not need an electronic ignition which unfortunately a lot of the nicer bulbs do. I cant wait for my bulb to come in I will be able to do a color comparison.
