that stinks. well maybe one day, after my tank is super established, i might be one of those people that has one doing good in a nano. Not this tank but when i get my 14g biocube. whatever though.
Tank looks like it's coming along wonderfully!
While I agree that an 8 (and probably even a 14!!) is too small an aquarium to hold a wild Mandarin, just you wait. The possibillity of seeing aquacultured mandarins who are bred on mysis and formula one are growing every day...There's an FIT kid down here in Florida who already did this. It's not enough to market, but it's a start. And mst importantly, his juvie mandarins were weaned on prepared foods!
The problem isn't that they "can't survive" on prepared foods...it's that they simply won't eat enough of them. Wild Mandarins first and almost exclusive diet is pods...even in our tanks, it's the rare 'drin that will take frozen. I got lucky; I have one in my 37 gallon tank and she supplements her pod diet with frozen mysis. And she EATS! She's a piggie. I know she's healthy because she's a fat little porker.....healthy mandarins are supposed to have a rotund appearance, a convex belly and fat sides. Even though I was a lucky one, I would not suggest trying to wean a mandarin until you've had some experience under your belt.
But don't worry.....keep the idea of a mandarin in the back of your head. Start with your 8 gallon.....upsize when you can....and who knows? In a couple years, you may just walk into a LFS and see a tank with ORA cultured mandarins, all hungry for some formula 1 pellets or a tasty mysis shrimp!
