I absolutly love my tusk too! It is a bit nervous feeding him though... but they are such a passive fish, nothing bugs them, and they bug nothing... unfortuante for me though... after the tusj had been in my tank for about 3 months, I decided to add a grouper... peacock grouper to be exact... everything was fine for a while... but now a good month later.... i found diffrent... the tusk is passive when it comes to everything but the grouper... my harley will chase him back into his hole and then go about... one morning I woke up finding my grouper with 3 bite marks on his dorsal... only one fish capable of such.... harley... and just be sure not to put any fish under an inch in length... those count as fair game when he gets bigger.... mines is a indo about 4-5" sorry no pics..

Thanks, I just bought it and I already really like this fish. Mine ate from the first day. I was able to hand feed it silversides and krill. It also eats raw shrimp and the regular food I put in for the other fish. Even eats algae that I feed the tang and foxface.
I missed out on this on vacation --....How is he doing?

He's doing great! Really personable fish, not afraid of anyone. Even when friends come over, he's always upfront probably hoping someone will feed him. Only weird thing is that he likes algae sheets. I thought they were carnivores. Like my yellow wrasse will never touch algae.

Yeah, mine is becoming my favorite fish in the tank. Very laid back, just loves to eat, though not algae yet. My Sunset Wrasse chases him half heartedly when they are eating and he gets too close, and my Coral Beauty occasionally tries to chase him, the Tusk kind of ignores him
.
Looks as though yours is an Aussie?

he's my most peaceful fish, he eats flake, brine, bloodworms, krill, clams, scallops, mysis, and seaweek; just about everything. THese fish have great personalities too.

Yep, he's an Aussie. So far I haven't noticed any fish actually bothering him. The Niger used to during feeding but I traded the Niger to the LFS so now I don't have any bullies in the tank anymore.

How are these with dwarf angels, snails and serpent sea stars?
Mine has shown no interest in the snails or the serpent star. But it has eaten one of my emerald crabs. The angel should be fine.

I felt really sad to give Nigel away. But I did it in the best interest of my fish. One of those things you have to do to keep everyone happy. It's funny now that Nigel's gone, all my fish are really active. My Foxface is out again swimming up front all day and the little Queen Angel thinks she's boss now.
You can see a definite change in behavior with all the fish now that they don't have to look out for the bully anymore.

I once found a serpent in my other tank and tried to put it in my sand bed, but my tusk rip it to shreds as soon as he saw it. He also likes to knock down snails and he tries to eat them.

My LFS has a new tusk that has red on the tail. They say its a Red Sea tusk. Is anyone sure that the colored tail is a sure sign of an Australian?

I think so. All the Australian Tusks I've seen have red on their tail. Mine has yellow with red along the end of the tail. Australian ones also have a deeper blue on their back and the stripes are more defined.

I'm not sure how it could've happened, but it almost seems like they got an aussie by mistake. The new one I'm talking about has more blue then the other one they have in and also the red along the end of the tail. I got all excited when I saw it and asked them if it was an aussie and they said it was red sea aka indian. I think I'll go back tonight and reserve it. Even if its an Indian, it has great colors for one.

Ok, I went back and checked it out yesterday. Both tusks they have there have the coloration on their tale and the other is obviously an Indo. Also, while the Blue on this one is deep, it doesn't extend all the way to his (pectoral?) side fin like other australians as I've seen. Still, I reserved him anyway because he has really deep vibrant colors.

Only problem is that Indo Tusks have pretty high mortality rate in captivity. Australian ones are a lot more hardy. In my opinion, it all depends on how it was caught.

Ya I know. The LFS has had the lighter colored one for over a month. This one came in on the 8th and I have 2 weeks to pick it up. They take good care of their fish and the others I got there have worked out well. If it looked at all sickly or wasn't eating I wouldn't get it. I'd worry more if I were ordering online.

I'd say you can keep one in less than 100. They are not fast swimmers or as active as other wrasses. Usually they like to lay in caves and check out all the action, then swim around a while.
