I have always thought of plate coral as being solitary coral, not colonial with round and flat skeletal dish short tentacles and ONE central mouth. BUT all of a sudden one of my plate coral seems to have developed multiple mouths around its central one

Hi Joe, this is one of three known means of reproduction for Plate Coral called schizogony. The other two are Pedal Laceration (often from an injury) and sexual reproduction from sperm & eggs.

That's really cool!
Bang, does the coral choose the best method based on circumstance and environment?

Thanks Bang I always thought that they being both male and female and can reproduce both sexually and asexually will most likely in our tanks reproduce sexually by releasing eggs and sperm at the same time, resulting in a fertilized egg which then forms into a free-swimming stage.

Joe, that may be the most beautiful Plate I've ever seen. I hope it splits successfully. I could be wrong but if memory serves me right (unlikely) they typically split into 6 plates.

I believe it's all of the above including availability of food. Interestingly, abundant food and ideal environment can induce spawning as can extreme stress. Pedal laceration can be induced by an injury like something breaking off an edge can produce a constant supply of little clones coming off the injury site.

I have a plate coral that is attached to a piece of rock. It will grow to about 1 1/2" dia. then it pops of its base and a another plate starts up on existing stem. This particular stem has produced 8 separate plate corals and now has two addition stems growing on rock. And again Joe that is the most amazing color i ever seen.

This photo was taken 5 months ago, the plate coral on rock above second one from left is on the stem. All those plates have come from the one stem. I'll take a new photo tonight since then that one has fallen off and you can see the stem better since the plate is small and the multi stems growing there new plates.

Yes it is, this tank has been up for 21 years. It still has half of the under gravel plate in it. I've read that plate coral prefer CC over sand, so never changed it out.

That is what my daughter tells me all the time
. Ya started this tank when we moved into my new house, just to keep addiction going. Only kept crabs and shrimps at first, then my son brought home a hammer for my birthday. Then it turned into a mini reef.
